If you're in the area, this should be a place to take in some historical truths. When walking through, not only can you recount the historical context of Apartheid, but one should be able to see its affects on natives of SA then and even now. Only then are we able to understand how truly devastating the systems of Apartheid IS. It's rather insightful and warrants actionable atonement. This is not meant for just another walk through another museum.
Must go to the Apartheid Museum! A wealth of history, so powerful and well presented. Tour guide is recommended. There are a few details you might miss otherwise. And the museum is very large, so the guide helps you move along a bit quicker without missing anything.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes
This is one of the best organised and thoughtfully designed historical museums I've visited in a while. When you enter the museum, you are immediately challenged to empathise with people who lived under Apartheid rule. It compares favourably to the Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC. Although we had two hours, we could easily have used another hour. If you read English, you do not need a guide. NOTE: no photos can be taken once you enter.
Absolutely a must see museum when visiting South Africa. I would love children from all over the world would visit it and learn from great historical mistakes against people that are different from the ruling class. Very detailed explanations and pictures of the recent history 75 years of South Africa. This visit must be done twice, one to learn the history and again once you have absorbed it, analyzed the wrongs of the past and revisit the history to complete your overall understanding of the culture and how this could happen again anywhere in the world.
Excellent museum. Oddly situated next to Gold Reef City using the same entrance. Very immersive with plenty of detail about the origins of apartheid. Had video footage and artefacts too including one of the armoured carriers. Not much for young kids to see as expected given the subject matter. Could easily spend 2 hours here. Toilets were average.
Must visit for a history lover and anyone who wants to learn about the horrific past of South Africa. Motivates you to firmly stand against all kinds of racism and believe in equality.Visited onWeekendWait timeUp to 10 minReservation recommendedNo
As a human of the darker skin shade, stepping into this museum gave us a serial of goosebumps as we peeked into the dark history of Apartheid in South Africa. It took us some time to comprehend the heinous crimes committed in the name of racial discrimination and this museum stands as a grim reminder of the inhumanity of humans. Wonderfully curated, simple to navigate, The Apartheid Museum will continue to guide the upcoming against the evils of our own past.
Wonderful museum! I would recommend booking a tour guide since they can help tell the Apartheid history and answer questions. As an outside visitor, it helped me better understand the people and history of South Africa.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes
The Apartheid Museum is a must-see attraction in South Africa. Located next to an amusement park, it offers a powerful and thought-provoking experience. The museum chronicles the history of apartheid in South Africa and the struggle against it. Visitors can see exhibits on the lives of black South Africans under apartheid, as well as the resistance movements that fought against it. The museum's design is impressive, and visitors walk through a series of exhibits that highlight the horrors of apartheid. The exhibits are interactive and engaging, and there are audio and video presentations throughout the museum. Overall, the Apartheid Museum is an important and moving tribute to the struggle for freedom in South Africa.
The exhibition structure was good. The background would have to be explained in multiple languages to gain the sympathy of people from different cultures.
