Bayhead Natural Heritage Site

Description

Bayhead Natural Heritage Site is a 20ha nature reserve of mangrove forest and coastal grassland within the industrial area of Durban Bay, South Africa. The reserve is a remnant of what was once the largest mangrove swamp in the province.A number of birds can be found in the reserve, up to 120 different aquatic birds have been recorded. As in the nearby Beachwood Mangrove Nature Reserve, various crabs can also be found. There is a boardwalk and public information centre on site.In March 2015, a vegetable oil spill from a refinery in the area caused a number of mangrove trees to die.

Security was good, but the hiking trails were overgrown with low lying branches from overhead trees and long grass, we were unable to continue our long hike as hiking trails were not seen or impassable , and the once upon a time walkways non existent.. There was Quite alot of plastic waste washed up along the harbour seaside edge, and it was so sad to see.. The picnic site and toilets were decent. It looks like a beautiful green haven, but it is in defininite need of a good clean up and fix. We did however see lots of crabs in the mangroves..
Very well maintained and forgoten heritage site. Great spot to take the kids for a bit of a walk and chase the crabs and get back to nature
Very nice place to go birding...Lots of birdlife but unfortunately the tide brings in rubbish.
It is still a good spot to visit, in my opinion. However not in the greatest condition. Toilet is clean and decent. Pathways are kept cut, but boardwalks are non-existent. Hoping that NPA will start making it better again once more people visit.
It's a microcosm of what Durban bay was before industrialisation destroyed most of it. The facilities aren't being maintained but ignore that. The toilet works and there are security guards. The entrance to the board walk has been blocked because parts are disintegrating due to inadequate repair but if one proceeds with caution and common sense one can experience the mangroves. Good birding for waders.
So So place... Paths have been cut nicely, but the beach sections are full of trash... A LOT OF trash. The wooden bridges needs maintenance. There are rumors that you will now need "permission" to enter the site, from some dodgy office in town?!?! Well...that is what a security guard told us last time we went the Geocaching. Toilets were OK...but no toilet paper
Great potential but very poorly maintained
Not much to write about. Parking is adequate. Security at the premises unaware of why it is an heritage site. There is bird life. No directional boards or route markers.
A bit disappointing. The paths were seriously overgrown and it looked like some homeless people had been living in there. Fear of snakesand muggers caused me to turn back about 100m in. Managed to get some decent pictures of a few butterflies though. Hopefully maintenance will resume now that covid lockdownmeasures have been eased.
It's got great trails a bit of bird life but what I love to watch at low tide in the mangrove roots is the crabs that live in the sand how they grab a fallen leaf and pull it into the hole
