Constitutional Court of South Africa

Description

The Constitutional Court of South Africa is a supreme constitutional court established by the Constitution of South Africa. It was originally the final appellate court for constitutional matters. Since the enactment of the Superior Courts Act in 2013, the Constitutional Court has jurisdiction to hear any matter if it is in the interests of justice for it to do so.The court was first established by the Interim Constitution of 1993, and its first session began in February 1995. It has continued in existence under the Constitution of 1996. The court sits in the city of Johannesburg. It also has occupied a purpose-built complex on Constitution Hill. The first court session in the new building at this location was held in February 2004.The Constitutional Court consists of eleven judges who are appointed by the President of South Africa from a list drawn up by the Judicial Service Commission. The judges serve for a term of twelve years. The court is headed by the Chief Justice of South Africa and the Deputy Chief Justice. The Constitution requires that a matter before the Court be heard by at least eight judges. In practice, all eleven judges hear almost every case. Decisions are reached by a majority and written reasons are given.

Very interesting to be inside a Supreme Court of the land. They have sessions for only 6 months of the year. The 11 Constitutional Court judges can only serve a maximum of 15 years, and cannot be older than 65. Currently made up of 9 men and 2 women. These are appointed by the President of South Africa. It is free to get into the main court room, even on days when in session on first base first served. The court room has windows at ground height so you can see the feet of people walking outside. This is to represent that no one is above the law.
I took my boys for a history lesson at the Constitutional court for Reconciliation day. The self guided tour is free on any holidays. Today we walked through a history lesson. It's beautifully told. This place is a walk through our own history. The pictures and videos tell the story of what our people paid for the freedom we have today. It's sad but also we learned and appreciate where we are as a nation today. I would recommend everyone to go check it. It's a history lesson, it was like walking through time. It was an amazing experience.
There is this tour guide called Ntsika, he is amazing, he is beyond tour guiding, he is like a lecturer, we really enjoyed his tour, my guest's were very much impressed about the knowledge he shared with us
A place worth visiting, there are special tours that ferry tourists around Johannesburg that includes Constitutional Court with experienced tour guides who know the historical and cultural sites perfectly well. The Constitutional Court was built where Nelson Mandela was prisoned. Most political activists who stood head and shoulders against Apartheid government where sentenced there. The jails have not been tempered with with exception of Constitutional Court being built there. This is a place worth visiting especially if the tour includes Soweto in Orlando where most Activists including Mandela stayed during Apartheid years.
Very educational experience
A fascinating building to see, partly due to the awe that it inspires as a high court building of a major country but also because of the rich history it represents. Very cool that it's open to the public. There are quotes by Nelson Mandela displayed prominently inside. In the spirit of what the court stands for, the outside of the building prominently says "Constitutional Court" in many different languages.
Visited Constitutional Hill, felt very sad and enlightened at the same time, interesting to see large tour groups visiting and so interested in our rich history, even got the opportunity to sit in the Constitutional Court of South Africa during a sitting of our Honorable Judges. PROUD OF MY COUNTRY, despite our shortfalls.
From the tour of the prisons, which is depressing obviously but necessary to understand the history and to ensure it never happens again, to the hope and positivity of the Constitutional Court which upholds human rights and focuses on making the future a more just one.
impressive, visit as part of the Constitución Hill visitor centre tour
It was great to be taken on a tour by Amy and relieved the aspirations of Mandela and those who ushered in the constitutional democracy!
