De Waal Park

Description

De Waal Park is a public park and heritage site in the Oranjezicht suburb of Cape Town. The park, which contains over 120 species of trees, is popular with dog walkers. The park is roughly rectangular. Molteno Dam borders the park to the south, with the other three sides bordered by roads. There are four tennis courts belonging to the Gardens Tennis Club in the South West corner. In summer, the park hosts free outdoor concerts on Sunday afternoons.HistoryDe Waal Park was Cape Town's first and largest public park, after the Company's Gardens, when it was opened in 1895.In 1877 the City Council of Cape Town purchased land from the Van Breda family who owned the farm Oranjezigt. They divided the land into three parts, first building the two smaller reservoirs below Camp Street and then building the Molteno Reservoir below Belvedere Road which also provided the city with electricity. The land in between formed a natural park.David Christiaan de Waal, who was the city councillor at the time and also a member of the Legislative Council of the Cape Colony, decided to develop the park. At his instigation thousands of trees were planted in Cape Town and especially in the park. As Mayor of Cape Town, 1889-1890, he developed the park further and it was opened to the public officially in 1895.At one stage it was called Jubilee Park but it soon reverted to the name it bears today. Two gates with brick piers and wrought-iron arches in Art Nouveau style at the lower corners and a wall along Camp Street were built in 1899 and the wall was extended up Upper Orange Street in 1900. Molteno Road was extended down to meet Camp Street at about this time and it was decided to fence off the park on that side by planting a hedge of Kei apple.

Lovely little park in the heart of Cape Town CBD. Just a nice place to go for a picnic, walk your dog or to meet friends over a cup of coffee. A bit of tranquility in the City.
Went with my friends, the kids enjoyed the park, ground was wet because of raining, perfect for your furry friend's play date woof woof Playground: Big space for kids to run around, playground need some here and there maintenance but not too bad, I'll definitely come again Dog-friendliness: Your dog will love this place since many people bring their dogs here too. Picnic area: Great in summer, in winter the ground is wet obviously
My dog and I joined the function at this park. it is clean and doggy park. nice park to take your dog for a walk. some people have picnic there.
Was doing a medical standby for a small event hosted within the park.. Great venue, well maintained, safe n secure parking and hygienically sound ablution facilities. Loads of fun equipment for kids and family to enjoy...
Our family throughly enjoyed our walk through De Waal Park, pleases be warned it's more of a Doggy Park where dogs run around free, fortunately they are well mannered and tamed, friendly enjoys being patted and rubbed, lovely seating areas scattered around for picnics, saw a Birthday party and Baby Shower picnics being held, such a cool place to have an function, friends and family to meet up for a Sunday Lunch picnic, during the week where the coffee stand is situated at the Round Band Stand they have occasionally live music on a Sunday afternoon, all in all, we had a lovely afternoon at De Waal Park
Big park that used to be so beautiful, but now is not well maintained. People that bring dogs don't pick up after their poo. The Little coffee shop there is such a beautiful addition, with Table mountain as the backdrop. Children's play area also needs a bit of TLC.
Great 'doggie' park, where loads of people come to let the dogs play and socialize, come for walks around the park, play area for kids, do yoga or read a book under the trees. Great little fountain for pups to drink water or splash around, also some summer concerts by local artists to enjoy most weekends or holidays.
De Waal Park should be renamed Dog Park. Wonderful space to walk dogs off lead. Most dogs visiting de Waal Park are socialized and well behaved. The fountain is used as a space for dog's to swim and cool off. The park is popular on weekends for picnics, and there's several spots under trees with large tables and benches to accommodate those who don't wish to sit on picnic blankets. Monday to Sunday you can grab a coffee from the coffee vendor in the park and sit and enjoy the sounds of the water flowing in the fountain, work, or watch the squirrels! There's also a play area for children with some swings, slides etc.
Lovely Park to sit under the trees and have a picnic. Stunning views
Such an amazing space for a Concerts in the Park day! Good vibes on and off stage! Restrooms: Clean, but it can not handle too many people at once as the plumbing clogs up Picnic area: There are a lot of wonderful trees for shade, but just be aware when the wind picks up. The branches do fall from the top!!
