Huguenot Monument

Description

The Huguenot Monument in Franschhoek, Western Cape, South Africa, is dedicated to the cultural influences that Huguenots have brought to the Cape Colony (and ultimately the whole of South Africa) after their immigration during the 17th and 18th centuries. The monument was designed by J.C. Jongens, completed in 1945 and inaugurated by Dr. A.J. van der Merwe on 17 April 1948.The three high arches symbolizes the Holy Trinity, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. On top of the arches is the sun of righteousness and above that, the cross of their Christian faith. The central female figure, created by Coert Steynberg, personifies religious freedom with a bible in her one hand and broken chain in the other. She is casting off her cloak of oppression and her position on top of the globe shows her spiritual freedom. The fleur-de-lis on her robe represents a noble spirit and character. The southern tip of the globe shows the symbols of their religion (the Bible), art and culture (the harp), the agriculture and viticulture (the sheaf of corn and grape vine) and industry (spinning wheel). The water pond, reflecting the colonnade behind it, expresses the undisturbed tranquility of mind and spiritual peace the Huguenots experienced after much conflict and strife. The Huguenot Memorial Museum neighbouring the monument elaborates on the history of the French Huguenots who settled in the Cape, and especially in the Franschhoek Valley. On exhibition are the various tools they used to make wine, clothes they wore and the culture and desire for a better life that they brought with them.

Franshoek is such a beautiful town with so much history attached to it. When my kids were younger we would often bring them to the monument. When we were last there the gates were closed but the monument still looked beautiful surrounded by the stunning landscape. The area has always been immaculately kept and is always spotlessly clean. There are signs advising visitors not to climb over the fence this is a very popular place and people loves to record their visit to the monument. The location of the monument is perfect as it is so easy to come across on a Sunday afternoon drive.
Built in 1948 to honor the 300 or so Huguenots who settled in Frranschoek in order to escape persecution after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes. The three tall arches represent the holy trinity - and the colonnade behind represents the 12 apostles. No real need to get up close. You can see the monument from the street. However, do purchase a ticket across the street for the interesting Huguenot Museum next to the monument. It also includes admission to the grounds of the monument.
I went for a breakfast ride last weekend. I thought about walking through this monument since I've always ridden past here and never really stopped. I had a walk outside. But couldn't enter as the gates were locked. The info at the gates stated that it should have been open already, but no one was there. The plaque with monument info had been either broken or ripped off. Only the stone was there. I hope to return someday and be able to go inside.
Beautiful Monument in a pretty little town Franschoek. Just wished that the gates were open that you can walk right up to it.
At the very edge of Franschhoek's downtown core sits a largish monument that is dedicated to the memory of the 300 French Huguenot families who settled in South Africa starting in the late 17th century. Not only did the Cape region provide a safe place from persecution, its climate was quite similar to the one that many of these families were used to in Southern Frnace.
When there for the first time and it was beautiful, my husband d and I had to stop for a pictureWait timeNo wait
This is really the cultural centre of Franschhoek and the history goes back more than 100 years. It's set at the end of the main road and you can't miss it when you vist the town. It's easy to see that it's very well maintained and cared for. However, to visit the museum costs a whopping R100 per person which is a rather ex0000orbitant amount for locals. It's very popular with selfie seekers and there are plenty of signs warning you not to climb over the walls.
Amazing place to go to for a Sunday afternoon drive. So much to see and so much to do. Art gallery's, shops and restaurants galore. All I can give is my opinion of what I experienced and I had a great one. All of this to see in Franschhoek.
I visited Franshoek over 40 years back. Very excited and with high expectations of visiting the meuseums again turned out to vanish with the fog today. Everything was closed. Buy tickets across the street they say. Closed. Eventually our knocking and ringing the bell was answered. R100 per person might sound cheap but if you are a party of 4 it is too expensive for locals. So the conclusion is: If you are South African you shall not visit places of cultural interest because of the high price. From Somerset Wes, Stellenbosch, Paarl and Franshoek, be sure to pay ridiculous entrance fees. Very very very dissapointed to return home with without the chance to see and experience what I came to do.
Beautiful Monument with loads of History behind it and set in a Beautiful Location
