There is so much history intwined in this area and the very informed guide just shared so easily and well. It was a very memorable experience. We also enjoyed lunch which turned out to be one of my best pie experiences ever. The community was very friendly and the whole Genadendal encounter was one of my most memorable.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes
Unfortunately I got there too late so I couldn't go inside. I do wonder though why the residents do not encourage the orchards of lime trees and sell it on a larger scale? There's much to tap into here and market this quaint town on a bigger scale.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo wait

Spontaneously decided to pop by from Greyton on New Year’s Day. Everything was closed as expected. What we didn’t expect was to find the place so fascinating so that we’d be bummed that the museum and all facilities were closed. Luckily we stumbled onto the reverends son who gave us a personalised tour of the place and let us into the church. He was so knowledgeable and proud of the town’s history despite not being an actual tour guide. We will definitely be coming back again when we know the museum will be open. Worth a visit
What a lovey, historic, little town situated at the foot of the Riviersonderend mountains in the Overberg region of the Western Cape. The "dorpie" is situated about 3 kilometres away from Greyton. The dorpie has a welcome sign as you enter and across the welcome sign is a small stop with seating for six under the shading provided by the thatched roof. The place is historic and architecture dates back to 1737, but the highlight of the place is probably the Genadendal Mission museum. It is well worth it to visit the place even if it's just to stretch the legs and rest weary eyes. I recommend the town.
Very interesting to hear about the history of the museum and also of the life of the curator Dr Balie. Due to time restrain we did not go into the museum itself to have a look around. The print museum was the only other area that was open.Visited onWeekdayReservation recommendedNot sure
Bumped into Reverend Wyngaard, who gave us a tour and background info about this Moravian Mission, the oldest mission in South Africa. The mission also houses the oldest school and teachers training college in South Africa. The missionary who established this mission in the 1600s, was basically not allowed to practice in Cape Town, and after meeting a Khoi San man there he was led to begin this mission station a few hundred kilometers away. His works in mysterious ways. Inspiring story!
The birth place of the Moravian Church in South Africa and where many first things took place in South Africa. It definitely needs to be on your bucket list of places to see and you will be taken back in time. Don’t forget to have a local coffee or meal.
