I spent there two weeks as a volunteer and absolutely loved it. I learned a lot about marine life and could gain hands on experience in shark handling. I can recommend it 100 percent
I spent 6 weeks as an intern with SASC and loved every minute of it. The people were wonderful and the nature of the work was satisfying and educational. Would recommend!
I spent 5 weeks with the South African Shark Conservancy as an intern and had an amazing experience here. I learnt so much during my time, which as an marine conservation student is incredibly valuable for my future. I would highly recommend this internship/volunteering to any other marine science students or anyone with a passion for sharks! Thank you SASC
I completed a 2-month internship here and had an amazing experience. Sharks, sharks and more sharks! I highly recommend any early career scientists and or shark enthusiast to volunteer or pursue an internship. In my opinion, Meaghan SASC Founder is one of the most knowledgeable, outgoing, and flexible scientists I have ever met! During my stay, I was put in the SASC guest house. It is wonderful and very accommodating with a beach in walking distance. There is a maid that comes every Monday and Thursday that does a fantastic job. The skipper, Björn, is also another great addition to the SASC team... He is by far the greatest skipper I have ever seen. Martyn, the intern coordinator was very organized and easy to work with. Last but not least, Natalia, the operations manager, was very organized as well and clearly explained all operations. Overall, SASC is a great NGO with a great motive that plays a huge role in conservation and shark research.
The facilities are small yet well equipped, the volunteers have a good knowledge of sharks. For this I give them 4 stars. What I find annoying though is that I was charged a R100 entrance fee, yet checking their website afterward, find that entrance is FREE. For this I rate them 1 star.
Get taken on a tour by the Shark Conservancy’s passionate staff, where you get to meet and learn more about some of South Africa’s smaller and lesser known sharks as well as other marine conservation issues. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in Hermanus!
Well worth the visit. Good presentation given before visit to the lab where we were introduced to lesser known sharks . Highly recommend a booking.
Passionate and very knowledgeable conservationists. Great experience for budding scientists
