Limpopo National Park

Description

The Limpopo National Park was born when the status of Coutada 16 Wildlife Utilisation Area in Gaza Province, Mozambique, was changed from a hunting concession to a protected area. It forms part of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park with the Kruger National Park in South Africa and the Gonarezhou National Park in Zimbabwe.GeographyAdministratively, the park is split between Chicualacuala District (6400km2), Massingir District (2100km2), and Mabalane District (1500km2). The park is part of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park, a 35,000 km² peace park that will link this park, Kruger National Park in South Africa, Gonarezhou National Park, Manjinji Pan Sanctuary and Malipati Safari Area in Zimbabwe, as well as the area between Kruger and Gonarezhou, the Sengwe communal land in Zimbabwe and the Makuleke region in South Africa.HistoryWith the help of R42 million donated by Germany the new park is being developed with fencing and anti-poaching units. The park is divided up into three separate zones of use: a tourist zone, a wilderness zone, and a resource utilization zone (hunting). In the south is the Massingir Dam and the town of Massingir in Massingir District, which is the administrative headquarters of the new park, while on the northern border is the Limpopo River.

This side of the park cannot be compared to Kruger, it is still a relatively new park in comparison, the aria was only opened around 20 years ago. It is wild and mostly only accessible by 4x4 or a vehicle with high clearance. This is a true African experiance where communities still exist within the park, efforts have been made to relocate some of the villages to outlying arias and return the bush to natural habitat for game. It is an ongoing process to move the other settlements as well. I first visited this aria before it was a park and there was absolutely no animals as most had been poached and scared off. On our last visit it was amazing to see Buffalo, Elephants Giraffes and antelope back in the aria. Do not go to the park with the expectation of matching Kruger rather keep an open mind and be open to a different experience.
Really wild Park. I saw Syncerus caffer, Canis mesomelas, Aepyceros melampus, Phacochoerus africanus and Elephants. It's awesome in first morning hours. More animals near South Africa borderline. Enjoy.
Pity the ablutions are in disrepair. Animals are scarse. Great sights is you have a guide.
if you come here ,bring enough food ,no restaurant around the park,no shop to buy water,no signal if you use vodacom.and the ticket is double than mozambique nationals .and few animals you can see here.
Great venue ! please take extra water and enough food! if its not a guided or if you are traveling on your own steam.
I really liked how remote and wild this place is. Almost no facilities, but you will have it to yourself.
The facilities at the campsite at Albufeira are unclean and there is no water or electricity at the actual camp. There were no other campets nor people in thr chalets either. The card machine at reception wasn't working and they would not accept USD. We said we would come back the next morning to pay and it still wasn't working, so we had to drive back to Massingir to draw cash. We were treated like absolute criminals before we left for Massingir - staff are extremely rude. There was some very old Elephant dung near the campsite, but otherwise no animals and hardly any birds in sight. Would not recommend this as a stopover en route to the Giriyondo Border Post
Chalets clean and comfortable. We only saw elephant and a few impala. NOTHING else. Cattle are grazing in the park. There are kraals made of branches and and also a huge village!
Beautiful setting on the escarpment over the Massingir dam. Expensive entry fee of about R1000 for a family of five and poor service and another R1000 for camping not worth it. There is just about no game in the southern part and cattle roaming everywhere. Only worth while if you have to much time on your hands
Great experience if you prefer rough, unedited and wild nature parks. We were very impressed by the difficult challenge that the rangers face to battle poaching.
