Mrs Simpson is not just a restaurant but an idea, of simpler times and good memories. The food is rich and nostalgic while the atmosphere is stimulating and coherent with the food and excellent service from the staff. I don't say this a lot but, my god this was an amazing experience. Keep up the excellent work owners.
Excellent warm service, really tasty heart warming yet refined cuisine! Well thought out menu! Great selection. Host make you feel at home! Great wine selection and innovative decor!Service: 5/5
We had a nice dinner at Mrs Simpsons. The place is very nice and the waiters are very attentive. Menu is small, as the restaurant which gives a nice ambience. The price of food and drinks are a little over priced. Starters were very good, desserts as well, we both had the Rib eye which was unfortunately a little overcooked. Overall very good experience I recommend
My daughter, Cheyenne and I, had a very memorable experience at Mrs. Simpsons Restaurant. On entering, we were taken back in time to good old yesteryear. The artifacts and decorations are absolutely beautiful, and us, being ladies, spent the evening admiring the pretty shoes and handbags that are hanging on the walls and by the fireplace. The front of house is being run like Clockwork by Al and Kathleen, the most professional, honest and friendly people, who took very good care of us during our dinner. The food is beautifully prepared and presented by Bryan, Cullinary Art at it's best, and it tastes so delicious too. Thank you so much and highly recommended.
Has got to be one of the best South African restaurant I've been to. Quaint, romantic, eclectic and amazing food to boot. That mussels dish was sublime. Seafood pasta equally insane. Just all round great experience.Rooms: 5/5
Nice well known place. Great atmosphere and usually busy. The food disappointed. Yellow coconut chicken curry was overdone on the yellow spice. The chicken was not properly cooked and was chewy. The Gin and soda was served too diluted. Apparently the whole soda can was emptied into the gin glass. Taste became somewhat insipid. Usually the soda should have been brought in the side. The smoked trout pasta was VERY GOOD. The service was hurried. Servers looked overworked. Maybe it was nearly closing time. Come here but well before closing !
What a gem! The food was exquisite! Brian the owner came to our table and made it feel like home. The portions are generous and OMG, the Creme Brulee! Oh my Giddy Aunt, it's been a while since I've had SUCH a culinary experience. Thank you!Food: 5/5
Wow, how on earth did this place get such good reviews?!?! Bland overpriced food - average and forgettable starters with NO SEASONING. Has this chef heard of salt?! We were salting everything! Shocked that the duck special for the night consisted of BOILED duck with a super sweet yucky sauce. Turning the duck over, we could clearly see the residue left on the colourless meat that comes from boiling, probably in a pressure cooker. Not even a slight sear before plating! Both dishes had mashed potatoes and it was super lumpy with NO salt. The lamb shank was average, but at least not as terrible as the duck. The waiter was very friendly but literally running off his feet from table to table, so the dining experience was absolutely not relaxed and pleasant. We left him a generous tip as it clearly wasn't his fault. They were not attentive due to the clear understaffing. We declined dessert as we just wanted to leave.
Title: A Mixed Dining Experience at Mrs. Simpson's Restaurant in Dullstroom Rating: 3 out of 5 stars Review: During our recent visit to Mrs. Simpson's Restaurant in Dullstroom, my partner and I had a dining experience with both positive and negative aspects. While we enjoyed certain dishes, there were a few disappointments that affected our overall impression of the restaurant. To begin on a positive note, the springbok carpaccio we ordered was a highlight of the meal. As a couple, we decided to try two portions, and we were both pleased with the quality and taste. The carpaccio was well-prepared and had a satisfying blend of flavors, which left us wanting more. Unfortunately, we encountered some issues with our main courses. I ordered the Ribeye steak cooked to a medium-rare level, accompanied by blue cheese sauce. Regrettably, the steak was overcooked, exceeding the desired level of doneness. This was quite disappointing, as the texture and tenderness of the meat were compromised. Additionally, the blue cheese sauce lacked the expected burst of flavor, further detracting from the overall enjoyment of the dish. In addition to the steak, we also tried the chicken schnitzel, which turned out to be below average. The schnitzel was overcooked, resulting in a dry and tough texture. The lack of tenderness diminished the potential enjoyment of the dish, leaving us unsatisfied. On a positive note, the cheesecake we had for dessert was decent. It had a pleasant taste and a satisfactory texture, providing a redeeming element to our dining experience. Furthermore, it is worth mentioning that the atmosphere of Mrs. Simpson's Restaurant was very nice. The cozy and inviting ambiance added a touch of charm to the evening, creating a pleasant environment for dining and conversation. In conclusion, our experience at Mrs. Simpson's Restaurant had its ups and downs. While the springbok carpaccio and the restaurant's atmosphere were commendable, the disappointment of overcooked steak and a subpar chicken schnitzel impacted our overall satisfaction. We hope that the kitchen can address these issues to ensure a consistently enjoyable dining experience for future patrons. Food & drinks: It's good for dullstroom
The restaurant was on our list of places we wanted to go to, so we did visit over the weekend. I sent an email to make a reservation, as per the website, and when there was no reply I assumed all was in order and we arrived on Saturday evening for dinner. The lady at the door made it very clear that they were fully booked and was not aware of my reservation. There were a fair number of diners and after a few minutes she changed her mind and directed us to the upstairs room. We were a bit surprised to find another room with diners and about 3 unoccupied tables. So, we got a nice table and settled. The decor interesting but certainly contributing to a pleasqnt atmosphere. It was a special dinner at the start of our anniversary week and I asked for the winelist. I was directed to the bottom of the stairs where a selection of wines were displayed. I was slightly taken aback by the price of some of the wines, but decided on an affordable wine - albeit not my first choice of the availqble wines. The others were just too expensive for the label. The table service initially was fine, but it was clear that the loadshedding and number of tables/diners were a little too much. It was also obvious that Mrs Simpsons is not a fine dining restaurant. My wife's zucchini soup was good but way too much pepper, and my chicken livers was different - a bit too sweet to my taste. The half hotdog roll that accompanied both starters was not expected. A nice home-baked or even a cocktail roll would have been better. Our mains were presented beautifully. The indian lamb curry was spicy but unfortunately there was too much chillies, which overwhelmed the wonderful indian spice aromas. My rib-eye steak was very well prepared and served - it was a good plate of food. Unfortunately the table service disappeared around this time. The computer for printing the bills, as well as the coffee machine was off when the electricity came back on - probably because it came back on a single phase only not their fault at all. This resulted in the waitress having had to write out all bills by hand. We eventually ordered desert about 40min later, and no coffee available very sad indeed. My wife's apple crumble was one of the best, and my lemon cheesecake was good. Some of the dinnerware was not what we expected in a "fine dining" restaurant though. Overall it was a pleasant evening. But we left with a feeling of "ok, we now can say that we had dinner at Mrs Simpsons". And quite a big chunk out of my weekend budget. A slight letdown.
