We had a great tour for our school children. The history is lovely and they loved the big kaboom! Thank you for a top class tour Warren. Would be good to see more money or community effort spent on sustaining this heritage of ours
Officially closed but they do can let you in at 11:55 to experience the shot and exit again. I am unsure if they do every day. Shot is intense and with a lot of smoke. So keep your camera steady!
Officially Closed, BUT! Every day at 12:00 noon, a flag is raised and a cannon sounds below Signal Hill. The ceremony is to commemorate the fallen and survivors from WWI. The entire site is in very poor condition. Therefore, the site is officially closed. Unfortunately, no public money is flowing to open the site for locals and tourists. I myself went there on the off chance at 11:35 am and asked quite sweetly if I was allowed on the grounds. I was lucky and got in. Others were also lucky and were allowed onto the site. The cannons which fire the shot are 270 years old and belong to the oldest cannons in use in the world. A bullet is no longer fired here. Everything is electronic.
Go Cape Town! Go! It says: temporarily closed on the gate but The Cannon still fires everyday except Sundays and Public Holidays. Wait at the gate and politely ask if you can watch and they will gladly let you in. I love visiting here, I wish I had kept my own "Attendance Log". The cannon firing # is over 67000! I think my personal # is coming up to 50 soon and it's different everytime. Thanks always SA Navy. -------------------------------------------- 26 April 2023 Sadly I'd like to update that this facility is officially closed til further notice. The cannon's are still fired daily but the public are no longer allowed inside which means "the longest running tradition in the world" continues behind closed doors. Someone needs to step in here and guide the navy to a better solution.
I have mixed feelings. The location is Fantastic with Wow views. The history is there but the base in a sorry state. I doubt it has seen any maintenance in the last 30 years and vagrants are slowly stripping it to bare bones. I was told these are the oldest "firing" cannon in the World.
Can be a great tourist hotspot
According to Google you are “Open”, very disappointing that on arrival it is closed, no signage on the road up. The people living say it is closed for renovation, yet no builders in sight, the Simon’s Town Naval base has no idea what we talking about, Cape Town tourism say it’s been closed since before CoVid and also have no idea what’s going on. Such a pity, that this part of CT history is just “up in smoke”
Closed to the public. Stood outside high fences and only heard the explosion and saw smoke.Visited onWeekday
Interesting story about the history and why it is still active today. Amazing to experience to firing of the gun close up, a sound that you hear kilometers away
Historical, wonderful, informative, exciting...rhis Cape Town landmark does not get the attention and glamor it deserves! Views with big bangs and big guns...how does it get better than this!
