One of the most interesting and beautiful old houses I've ever been in.
I have visited here in the past and found it so interesting that I took a guest this week. What a disappointment. Inside the main entrance one of the staff was sleeping on a bench, didn't even attempt to look interested in visitors. The clock no longer works, the camera obscura is broken and most of the items in the museum are unmarked. I understand that museums are underfunded but this is not the way a tourist attraction and part of the town's history should be run.
The observatory museum provides a look into the Victorian period through the house of an esteemed doctor who was known to use the mirror in the attic to view the town in a panoramic manner. The views are spectacular and the device itself innovative. The house also boasts a number of pre-modern bicycles and a lovely garden in the back. Worth the visit.
A great way to learn things and climb a really narrow staircase. Would definitely recommend going at least once while you're in town.
Fitted with a clock that can help you see a panoramic view of Makhanda
Beautiful views of Grahamstown from the Observatory Museum.
A must see if you are visiting Grahamstown. The camera obscura is an eapecially Fascinating experience!
The place is in need of some general up-keeping. Valuable little treasure that’s hardly noticed in this town.
A must see in Grahamstown. You can view the whole town through a mechanism that uses mirrors to reflect images.
Great place to take kids. Especially enjoyed the dinosaur & fossils exhibit.
