Alessio Baking Company "An Italian Tradition, Il Tuo Pane"
Master Baker Dean Chiotti comes from a long line of Italian Bakers, starting with Michelangelo Dompè in 1687 Pagno Italy (where it continues to this day).
The baking legacy branched to America through Michelango's great-great-granddaughter Marcella. Culture did not allow female Marcella to inherit property—instead, when she was wedded to Baker Joe Chiotti in 1903, she was presented passage to America as a wedding gift. Here in Portland, Joe's brother Alessio was already President of the French Baking Company at 607 SW 6th Ave. When the newlyweds arrived Joe went to bake for Alessio.
In 1915 Joe and Alessio opened the New French Bakery at SE Hawthorne St and Grand Ave. Joe and Marcella started a family and in 1932 their sons Connie and Mike started their own Bakery: "Pierre's French Bakery" (a very well- known institution in Portland).
In 1970 Pierre's was purchased by Connie's son Dean, and his cousins Jack and Bill. The three cousins ran Pierre's and supplied quality breads for some of Portland's finest restaurants until a 1992 merge with Gais Bakery in Seattle.
In 2003 Dean Chiotti opened a new bakery in the old SE Italian neighborhood. Alessio Baking Company (2025 SE 11th Ave) has been providing extraordinary product for Portland's finest and most discerning eating establishments ever since.
