The ANF is simply amazing. We hiked the Minister Creek Trail as well as just driving around stopping every so often to get out and walk around a bit. Beautiful scenery. We saw three bald eagles, lots of squirrels and chipmunks, and a porcupine while we were hiking around. I highly recommend exploring the trails of the forest, but be warned: it can get really muddy, and the hiking is mostly up-and-down, so be prepared to rest often and take food and water along, especially if you're not used to hiking. We visited Hector Falls while there. Definitely worth the small hike to get to it.

I went camping at Jake's rocks area. There was plenty of camping areas all along the road. We brought our bikes to go riding on the new bike trails so we chose a site right next to the trail crossings. There was plenty of wood for fire which was great. The next day we went mountain biking. It was epic, the trails at Jake's Rocks were very well built with tons of great view and cool obstacles and bridges to ride over. Definitely going back several more times this summer

This is a top notch state park with many things to do for nature lovers of all types. The river is beautiful, as are its smaller tributaries where many fish, or kids play with rocks. There are some very good hiking and atv trails, as well. I particularly enjoy the remote camping options and enjoyed the peacefulness of solitude with my journals.

What is there to add about the Alleghany National Forest. It's an amazing place to visit. So many different things to see and do. Make sure and contact a local person for ideas if the Ranger Station on Route 59 isn't open. The staffing at the Ranger Station is exceptional very nice and friendly.

We visit this forest several times a year. Beautiful. Combination of forest and River offer not only natural beauty but also hiking, boating, even a small beach.. Don't miss Jake's Rocks, a mountain top covered with huge rocks moved around and dumped in the Ice Age. Hiking, climbing, great for kids with supervision.
