I would love to give 5 stars because I did receive great service from the stylist and have no complaints about my cut and style. I understand that I need to allow extra time for my services, so 2 hours for a haircut is acceptable. The only complaint I have is that they are taught to use a paddle brush to brush out tangles in wet hair. This cannot be done with fine hair. Both at Aveda Institute and Spa Mizan, I have had issues with breakage due to the way they brush wet hair. If you use a paddle brush on wet tangled hair, and force it through the tangles, it will break. A lot. At Spa Mizan, I didn't stop the stylist and my hair looked horrible and had to be cut more to fix the damage. At Aveda Institue, the stylist was attempting to brush out my hair in the same manner and I asked her to stop. I then asked if I could comb my hair out myself. I really wish students were taught that you can't rush through brushing out tangles in wet hair. Either let it dry a little more in the towel, or use a comb and work the tangles out.

I've been going for over 5 years and I've not had a bad cut yet. Great place.

Today was my first time visiting Aveda Institute. I had color (roots only), a trim (esp the bangs) and a manicure. My problem is with the so-called manicure and then the nail polish. To begin with, their manicures (and pedicures) do not involve clipping/trimming the cuticles, cutting hang nails, anything that involves cutting the skin. In my opinion, a manicure without trimming the cuticles is not a manicure. I pay for manicures because I cannot adequately trim the cuticles myself. If I had known they didn't provide this sort of manicure, I would never have gone in. When I made the appointment someone should have told me this!! Secondly, regarding the nail polish, the customer chooses the color they want (as usual). What they don't tell you is that upon opening the bottle it is yours. It will not be used again as it is now contaminated. I assumed it was the usual scenario to other shops where one has a manicure. The customer chooses the color. If the customer doesn't like the color, the manicurist is happy to change it to another. Not Aveda! What Aveda doesn't tell you is that if you decide on another color, because the new bottle you choose is now contaminated, because no one else can use it, it is yours; hence you must buy it. **Heads up Aveda** What does it look like when need to know/want to know information is being withheld from your customers? To me, it feels as though Aveda is desperate to scrounge extra bucks from customers.

I would like to note some details about my experience. The person who worked on my hair was a beginner student. However, this does not excuse the institute to leave them unattended at all times. I thought the instructor would be guiding them step by step, but that was not the case, the problems that I encountered during my experience needed supervision from an instructor. First, during the coloring process the student managed to cover most of my forehead and the side of my face with hair dye... Second, When it was time to wash, my face was constantly being splashed with water, some drops of hair dye and water managed to get into my eye... Third, my back was soaking wet, I had to ask the student to change the apron because it was soaking wet (this is something they should have done regardless). Fourth, they couldn't dry my hair, I had to give them notice on what thick hair needed in order for it to be styled correctly without frizzing. These are just some of the things I noticed, I suppose that there isn't enough practice or enough instructions from the professors, and lack of supervision. Students learn as they go in this industry, this is why its important to have supervision. PS: after I got home, I noticed that the back of my sweater was full of hair dye! Thanks!
