Big Sioux Recreation Area

My wife and I recently went on a hike here, we went on the trail called " valley of the Giants" what a beautiful trail! I can only begin to imagine how old some of the trees are for how huge they are. I enjoyed how the trail followed the river and covered varying grades of terrain. We also came across a yank yank ( mini woodpecker ) on a branch high in a tree ... We said hello but he didn't acknowledge our presence ... What an ass. The old log cabin is also a nice historical location to check out if you look to the Northeast of it there is a stairwell that leads down into an old pantry or maybe it was meant to be a bomb shelter not sure...

Park needs to spray for mosquitos. Definately not done before Memorial Day

Disappointing! We camped at Big Sioux Recreation campground at Brandon SD for four days (May 10 -13). We reserved the shelter but couldn't use it because the weather was cold and rainy. Management took the sides of the shelter off and removed a stove that was previously in the shelter. This is SOUTH DAKOTA.....we think the sides should be left on until Memorial Day weekend.

It was a pretty good time till we caught the park ranger spying on us in the trees at around 10 pm

Quiet, beautiful campsite, close to town, yet it feels as though you're far from civilization.
