George's Chicken & Fish

So we've gone here three times and have never been very impressed, but after this last visit, we aren't returning. So disappointed. I love to shop and eat locally, plus after living in the south, I sure love a good soulfood joint. When it comes down to it, slow service and disorganization is one thing, but when I'm not even sure the food is safe to eat, that's where I draw the line. Each time we've called to order, it's incredibly disorganized- half the time they're talking to you and the other half to someone else and they don't tell you. The people are nice enough, but it's very confusing and frustrating. Additionally, since we last called in, they only allow call-ahead orders if paying with credit card. When told, I said hang on while I get my card out and the lady just disappeared off the other line. We were still connected and I could hear them talking in the background but was as if they set the phone down and walked away. After waiting on the line for 3 minutes, I hung up and started heading there to pick it up. When we arrived, they ended up not having started our order and only had a couple sides available. So we sat down in their waiting area and waited 25 minutes before the chicken was ready. Then they forgot the mashed potatoes, which took another 5 minutes. Did I mention we were the only customers they were cooking for until 10 minutes before we left, when another small order was placed. While waiting the exorbitant amount of time for 6 pieces of chicken, I noticed the place was not very clean and there was even a half-smoked cigarette laying on the counter behind the register. My appetite was dwindling quickly. By the time we got home, I looked over the food and while the chicken looked and tasted fine, the mashed potatoes were awful. They unloaded a ton of pepper into it, was an off color, and I've had potato soup that was thicker than these mashed potatoes. After trying a bite, it had a weird taste along with pepper, so I just tossed it. Not serving that to my kids. By this point I'd lost my appetite altogether. The fries they also included were soggy. After giving this place the benefit of the doubt after 2 previous lackluster visits, we're done here. Really a shame.

Value priced daily specials. Great gizzards. Very good portions (got half to go.) Standard fried fare, but with lots of options. Soda/side included with most. Extra sides are an inexpensive add on ($1 bacon/$2 mac-chz) Have had salty fry mix before but overall I really appreciate the local family environment and good cookin. If the lot is full there are a few spots around back.

Had catfish (2 fillet) and wing (2) dinner combo. Catfish was corn breaded and cooked perfect. Light and a little flakey in spots. Only slightly earthy and not at all fishy. I like it a bit earthy tho. Lightly breaded wings with lemon pepper season. Good stuff. Slaw was homemade fresh and good. Fries were good. Banana pudding was good and portion generous enough possibly for 2. Service really friendly, attentive and knowledgeable. Not unfriendly but not real personable during my first visit several months ago. Place appeared to be reasonably clean. Some people may just not like things like use of duct tape to hold down rug mats safely. Whatever people. Get a life and just enjoy the fish!

Great food. Had both the Philly cheese steak, and the Philly cheese chicken. Very tastey. The wings are also amazing. Especially with a little hot sauce. Very friendly and helpful staff. Will be back to try even more food. :)

Good chicken wings and Polish sausage, service was very slow at 1:30 PM.
