The Johnstown Inclined Plane

Story

Built after the Johnstown flood of 1889, the Inclined Plane's original purpose was to connect downtown with the higher grounds of Westmont Borough in order to develop that area residentially. During Johnstown's two other floods in 1936 and 1977, the Incline became a lifesaver, helping people to escape downtown as well as to ship supplies into the valley.

In its heyday, the Incline carried approximately 1,000,000 passengers a year to and from the downtown area. This was larely due to the steel mills that were in operation. Today the Incline welcomes visitors and locals alike, carrying approximately 100,000 passengers a year.

The Johnstown Inclined Plane is the steepest vehicular incline in the world, meaning its 30' cars, which are large enough to hold 60 people, 6 motorcycles, or a vehicle, travel at the steepest grade for cars their size.

No trip to Johnstown is complete without a visit to our world-famous Inclined Plane.

The Inclined Plane was closed for rides due to construction while we were there but the view from the top was amazing.

I work here so I am biased. It is a great spot to learn a little history and see some of the laws of Physics in motion. The gift shop at the top has some nice souvenirs and items that will get you in the Johnstown Spirit. The Visitors center in the Restaurant complex has some great photos of the incline in earlier years, and great info!

Built by the Cambria Iron Company following the disastrous 1889 Johnstown Flood, this finally induced folks to move out of the flood plain onto the hilltop because now they had a way to get back and forth to work in the city. There is an observation deck at the top, which provides a panoramic view of the city. The hilltop is a very pleasant community, tree-lined streets, well-maintained houses. The Inclined Plane runs daily, typically every 15 minutes on the quarter hour, though during the winter months it is often closed down for maintenance, so it's advisable to call ahead to confirm. Nevertheless, the ride is simply wonderful.
