This station is awash with an intense urine smell. As others have mentioned it’s not a place you want to end up in the underpass at night. It looks like something out of a movie. Most definitely not the best place to be. Pictures from the L Platform adjacent show you the station.
Pretty nice station located under Atlantic avenue, and next to a run down elevated station that's served by the L train. The underpass can be a tad sketchy at night.
This station does not have a station agent. Use the MTA etix app to get your tickets or at the ticket booths at the station. This station is not monitored or cleaned often. Just be aware of your surroundings etc. Much better to get your tickets in the etix app then at the ticket booth. Much more secure. Your phone may need to be an airplane mode on and off to show the agent on the train going through the tunnel
Arguably the most notable train station in the legal field. The accident that resulted in Palsgraf v. Long Island Railroad Co. happened here in 1924.
If u are trapped on the L train side of the station, look for the hole in the ground at the small triangle intersection to your left. Beware, there is pee everywhere. The whole station is some sort of “pee sanctuary” or urine ritual site. Not big into pee magik, but there is definitely an eerie sense to the place.
This station is kind of a shame as it gets you on the LIRR so easily from surrounding neighborhoods, especially if you need to go to JFK or Jamaica or even into Atlantic terminal. Unfortunately it is very unmarked, the underpass to the eastbound platform is not well lit or marked and smells like urine and you'll be confused as to which platform you should be on.
A real "stab and jab" looking station. To begin with no sign on the entrance telling you it's a station - just a hole in the ground. Like others noted the tunnel to the track is a dark wet pee smelling adventure. It was raining when I went and the pee was still overpowering- so hold your breath and review your jujitsu before heading down. Once in the platform you will notice there are no signs - except the wooden station sing that has been torn in half to reveal a jagged edge. I was actually compelled to take a look over in the tracks to make sure that I hadn't stumbled onto a decommissioned station. What is crazy is that although the station has to be one of the worst in NYC the train that came included comfy padded seats and a ticket taker dressed in old school 1950s train attire.I would argue that the community around this station deserves better.
The city should be embarrassed for the obvious neglect of this station. Wheelchair accessibility and basic sanitation are not offered here. Traveling through the underpass is always a practice in holding my breath while speed-walking because there is no maintenance to rid it of its various pests and urine-saturation. It's a disgraceful, "tale of two cities" situation between this stop and the next - marking differences in neighborhood prioritization on behalf of the company and city.
Not very eye or nose friendly. It's a very rusted station with lack of maintenance. Train service is frequent enough to Atlantic Terminal and Long Island. Crossunder is smelly but necessary to get from one side of Atlantic Avenue to the other. A couple minutes walk to Broadway Junction station on the ACJZL and Atlantic Avenue on the L.
I've traveled the city and waiting for the LIRR here feels like something out of a horror movie. This is in the top 3 most run down stations in the city. The station is in dire need of repairs. At night it looks like a place where a horrible crime is just waiting to happen around the corner.
