G.W. Frank Museum of History and Culture

About

The G.W. Frank Museum of History and Culture is a historic home and history museum on the campus of the University of Nebraska at Kearney.

Description

Take a walk through Nebraska history! Located in a beautiful Richardsonian Romanesque mansion, the G.W. Frank Museum is part house museum, part history museum, part cultural center. Built in 1890, the opulent home of capitalists George and Phoebe Frank was among the first electrified houses in the American West. Its unique story as a once modern, stylish residence, turned rental property, sanitarium, and tuberculosis hospital offers a window into Kearney’s past – its early rise and fall, and its rebirth as a center for health and education.

Exhibits, tours, and programs explore the history and culture of central Nebraska, from the Gilded Age to the present. Learn about the industrialists, factory workers, and domestic servants who experienced Kearney’s rapid boom and bust. Find out what life was like for the doctors, nurses, and thousands of patients at the Nebraska Hospital for Tuberculosis. See the house’s ongoing restoration. Or simply enjoy our rotating displays of Victorian decorative art. There’s something for everyone!

We enjoyed this free museum for about an hour. Particularly nice representation of history about the decades when this home was used as a tuberculosis sanitarium is upstairs. The first floor is ornately restored to it's original style, which was only lived in for years by the family that built it, circa 1890.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entryFree

Educated and friendly staff willing to answer all questions! The house is a marvel within itself. The antiquities inside are hidden treasures of Kearney and its community. It's good to find a museum in the Midwest that retains it's history while keeping up with the 21st centuryvirtual tours!
If you are into history, there is a lot of it here. A great story too. Also, be sure to ask about the building next door.
I have always loved the Frank house, and now they have a new permanent TB floor, and added a interactive kids area where the kids can use some of the toys and color the wall pages about the Frank house, my kids of course loved the dress up part!
Very interesting history. Perfect for a catered brunch or small gathering. Grad students there are very knowledgeable about the history of Kearney and the Frank family.
The Frank House is awesome. It would be even better if it was left alone in its orginal state. Alot of history in this house that Kearney should be proud of.
Beautiful house with a lot of Nebraska history!
