We are a local non-profit organization, est. 1994, Traverse Area Community Sailing's mission is to provide sailing to NOMI.
Our Programs:
YOUTH SAILING - For children 8-17, the camp is taught by US Sailing certified instructors in 8' prams, Sunfish and JY15's. Each student is placed in a boat and program appropriate to their size and experience.
ADULT LEARN TO SAIL - For the young of heart, our adult program is taught in the 17' Interlakes on Boardman lake.
ADVANCED SAILING - Aimed at sailors who have previously participated in the Youth Sailing Sessions, the Advanced Session teaches sail trim, race tactics and advanced boat handling in 1 person (Lasers), 2 person (JY 15's) and 3 person boats (Interlakes)
TACS RACING TEAM - For Middle and High School students who have completed the Advanced Sailing Session, looking to fine tune your skills and learn to race? Then this is the next step for you. Designed for beginning as well as experienced racers, we will practice three mornings as well as particpate in local and US Sailing events. With the Sears Smythe, Beemis qualifiers here in Traverse City this summer this is the opportunity tp prepare and compete! The Racing Team also provides sailors the opportunity to race as part of a crewed boat on a 17' Interlake on Thursdays against some of the best sailors in the area.
FAMILY FUN NIGHT EVERY NIGHT! - Come sailing on Boardman Lake on with a season pass!
High School Racing Team - TACS supports local high school sailors competing in the Midwest Inter-scholastic Sailing Association. Sailors from Glen Lake, Suttons Bay, Traverse City Central and Traverse City West High Schools train on Tues, Wed. & Thurs. afternoons (in season). The teams travel to regattas across the midwest on their quest to have fun & win a National Championship
Traverse Area Community Sailing's mission is to provide sailing opportunities for the Grand Traverse Region by:
1. Increasing participation in sailing by community youth
2. Providing affordable sailing opportunities for community youth
3. Promoting respect and safety on the water while having fun
4. Providing a participatory activity which utilizes the unique environment indigenous to this area
5. Promoting life-long skills and life-long recreational opportunities
6. Providing opportunities for positive involvement and instruction for community youth during the summer
7. Promoting sailing's Corinthian Spirit of Fair Play
We strive to keep our programs affordable, due greatly to a tremendous amount of volunteers and donations. Parents are welcome to get involved, and we can always use extra help -- no experience necessary! Informal board meetings Friday @noon at Scott's Harbor Grill, Traverse City. Monthly Board Meetings are held the third Monday of each month at the Grand Traverse Yacht Club.
Note To Parents: Sailing is a wholesome sport that kids can enjoy right away and the lessons of sailing last a lifetime, like self-reliance, the value of team work, respect for the environment and the rewards that come from challenge and competition. Sailing builds physical strength and mental acuity.
