I visited the rock wall during my spare time during a conference, it was a lot of fun if you are a visitor read the bottom note! The kids that work at the climbing area are really nice. Plus, the best thing is that they belay for you, so feel free to visit solo. They have a nice variety of routes and wall that are well rated for beginners and experienced climbers such as myself. The bouldering area is also awesome, you'll find climbs from ~V0 - V7. Highly recommend as a student or visitor. Note: if visiting with a group you'll need special access, so get in touch with the Eppley Rec Center staff by email to arrange this before you arrive.
Great place! The recreation center has lots of nice, new facilities and everyone is always friendly. They are renovating the indoor pool currently check if it is available when you are reading this to make it even better than it already was. You should totally get a membership, I doubt you'll regret it!
Love this place! Weight rooms are great, there's basketball, and even spots where people can do badminton or racquetball. Basketball courts are always great; you can practice your shots, or even play a few games of basketball. It's a great way of meeting new people and maybe even making some new friends.
Such a great rec center for the student Terps and family members. It truly is a first class, start of the art facility. The indoor pool is Olympic size, the basketball courts are a plenty, wait rooms are used by the best athletes and there's also and indoor jogging space.
Would be a 5 star gym if not for the crowding and minimal equipment. Both weight rooms seem to be pretty full at most hours of the day, and considering the undergrad population of UMD there should be much more equipment. Two lat pull-down machines and 15 treadmills for a student population of 25k is not right. There are multiple small rooms to do your own thing in which is nice. But half of the larger weight room is taken up for four badminton courts, no one wants to play badminton that badly. Overall more equipment to better suit the amount of people who use the gym would make this a perfect gym.
I loved Eppley when I was a student at UMD. Basketball, racquetball, the gym, fitness classes, the smoothie bar they have there. The building and facilities themselves are always clean and working properly. So many memories that I will cherish for a long time. An integral part of my health and well-being during my college education.
Men’s shower has no hot water, reported four times to the gate and safeguards, they always said they have placed a work order for maintenance. But at least they could place a sign indicating if there’s hot water available today. And one week later, still no hot water
Update 12/21 I just come to hoop but it wasnt a lot of space for basketball like it usually was. There are volleyball nets at mid court and they are stationed there. Also in the other gym they moved workout equipment in there taking up the basketball court. Other than that its only $7 for a day pass and they have other things you can find in the pictures. Satisfied but couldve been better if the courts were open for full court. I love this rec center its always bump on the basketball courts and if i need to work out or go for a swim then i can do that in the same building then get back to the gym and get back on the court.
I’ve been going to Eppley for close to 9 years now since I was a freshman at UMD. It is unfortunate but Eppley really went downhill after covid. Personally, I always went to play basketball but since 2020 they have reduced basketball to 2 courts used to be 4. The other 2 courts they converted to weights and racquetball for whatever reason. It seems odd to have the courts but then use them for other purposes, and as a result the remaining courts get insanely busy - sometimes unable to even get a game in. Otherwise, their daily pass is now $10 up from $7 and i’m not sure for what. Their equipment is aging and the whole facility is clearly not big enough for all of UMD. I hope they can do something to resolve some of these issues as recently i’ve been dreading driving an hour from Arlington to come when it’s been such a mixed bag especially when classes are going on.
Eppley is the best. I will be buying an Eppley membership after I graduate if I am living around campus. One great but little known part about Eppley is the Adventure Program behind it; they have a rock wall and bouldering area for climbing, adventure trips during weekends and some week days, and you can rent out gear for outdoor recreation at the rental desk. 10/10 would adventure again.
