Breakwater Lodge

Description

The Breakwater Lodge in the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, Cape Town, South Africa was built as a prison in 1859. It is now part of the University of Cape Town and a hotel. The original prison was built in 1859 for convicts from Britain at the suggestion of John Montagu who was the colonial secretary to the Cape of Good Hope from 1843 to 1852. They were transported to The Cape to work on the construction of the breakwater which would allow the harbour which is now the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront to be built. The remains of a treadmill on which prisoners were punished can still be seen.During the later part of the 19th century other prisoners were accommodated at Breakwater prison and it was the first site to racially segregate black and white convicts. In 1902 white prisoners were moved into a new building, called the Industrial Breakwater Prison, which remains today. The design with four castellated turrets and an enclosed courtyard was styled after Millbank and Pentonville prisons in England. After ten years as a prison it became a juvenile offenders institution and from 1926 until 1989 a hostel for black dock workers.Since 1991 it has served as the business school of University of Cape Town and hotel run by the Protea chain.

Had a great time, courteous and attentive staff. Excellent breakfast. Could do better on the buffet. Stone throw from waterfront and red bus station. Walking distance of most amenities. Cozy little spa on first floor. Prompt room service, overall great stay. Would recommend it to friends and family.Rooms: 4/5
The hotel is rated a 3 star hotel but I would say it is closer to 4 star. We had the harbour suite highly recommended and the views were amazing. Staff were friendly and the room was well equipped with a iron and mini fridge. The parking is also useful and the location is one of the best for the price you pay for the hotel.
Food is good. Good variety. Value for money. Staffs in general well mannered. Tiny room. No space meant for suitcase. But clean room. Maintenance bad. We had a broken shower hose and a noisy AC. Staff did not respond quickly. One rude restaurant staff. Our package did not include breakfast. We knew we had to pay but thought it was going to be charged to our room and we would settle at check out. First morning, no one asked for payment, second morning the one staff asked for payment. We said our purse was in our room and we had to fetch same. She said in front of all clients "i cannot let you leave the room without payment". How do we pay if we do not fetch our puse from our room? She retained me at the restaurant while my husband went to fetch his purse. She treated us like crooked people. Very humiliating and this ruined my mood until the end of our stay there. Why did they let us go without paying on he first morning? Means the staffs themselves do not know their work.
Excellent location-- very easy to walk to the V&A markets, shops, mall, aquarium, etc Free, easily accessible parking. The rooms are small but tidy, although there is no space provided for luggage. The doors aren't well-sealed and you can hear everything out in the hallway. But the wifi was excellent, the beds were comfy, and the location was great. Nice ambience.
Beautiful place to have a stay in. Receptionist are super nice and makes sure you're at your most comfortable when arriving. Bathrooms are a bit tiny. I would recommend you make sure you choose your room based on pictures. Room service is always on time and makes sure they restock coffee and if the room is clean for you to enjoy. However, the size of the room makes up for that. It is equiped with a smart TV that's quite big. The room is equipped with a telephone to call the receptionist in case you need something. The location is good, 10 minutes walk from the V&A mall. However, the turn in and out of the Hotel is a bit challenging, especially when there is a lot of traffic.
The room Dock Suite was spacious & comfortable with partial views of the V&A Waterfront and Table Mountain, very close to Green Point Stadium, Mouille Point and literally a 2min walk to the Waterfront. Sadly however there was audible noise from the road in the evenings. Great selection at the buffet breakfast but the food was cold. Other than that I had a lovely stay.
Not my favorite hotel. Check in process is very slow. Rooms are a bit funky. My family stayed here twice over our time here and one of the rooms didn’t even have a shower. AC was very spotty too. Never felt comfortable in rooms. Breakfast was good though!
Had dinner at the Stonebreakers Restaurant. For that calibre of eatery it was an underwhelming experience. The waiter was disorganized & forgot orders, brought wrong things to the table & got annoyed when we insisted on him getting our orders right. We ordered wine for the table & he just plonked it down without even pouring for anyone. Worst was when my steak was taken back to the kitchen so they could give me the proper side & when it came back I could swear it was reheated in the microwave. It was as dry as the Sahara. I've had better experiences than this. Sorely disappointed in the service here. Food & drinks: Not good.
Nice, though bit old dated hotel. Rooms are spacious but the structure of the building is so old that you hear every door slamming on the same floor. Very noisy. The bed is good and the shower less because the water turns hot and cold by itself; no fixed temperature level. Breakfast location is 2 building blocks away and breakfast itself is moderate. But don't come too late because most of it has then been out of stock. Fortunately it can be stocked but it takes time. There is no management of continously supplying of food and drinks during breakfast time. Staff is 5 star; wonderfull people who all try to feel you at home. They need an applause! Conclusion: price/quality too low.
The architecture is really rudimentary. The breakfast and lunch were great. For the managers: please fix the exhaust, your omelette making person was suffering due to heat. The good thing about the hotel is they provide free water bottles every day. But the internet or wifi is super bad! The staff at the reception is great! It’s more like a lodge than a hotel. So don’t have huge expectations but the rooms are big and with standard interior.
