Constitution Hill (South Africa)

About

ConHill is a museum, & the site of the notorious Old Fort prison, Number 4 prison, Womens Gaol, & the home of the Constitutional Court of South Africa.

Description

Nowhere can the story of South Africa's turbulent past and its extraordinary transition to democracy be told as it is at Constitution Hill.

Constitution Hill is a national heritage site situated in the Johannesburg CBD and is home to the Constitutional Court of South Africa– the highest court in the country on constitutional matters. Once a place of injustice and brutality, where South Africa’s leading political activists, including Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi, were detained, the site has been transformed into a place of solidarity and democracy, home to the Women’s Gaol museum, Number Four Museum, and Old Fort Museum. Apart from its engaging and gripping exhibitions, Constitution Hill is also open to the public for guided tours and has become an important platform for Heritage, Education, and Tourism related programmes.

The vast variety of programmes hosted at Constitution Hill enable us to embrace current issues, celebrate days of national significance, address matters of public interest and create a forum for public debate. With its rich history and character Constitution Hill boasts of ideal platforms to educate and learn about South Africa's story.

ConHill, as it is famously known, also offers a variety of multipurpose venues, suitable for conferencing, performances, a large array of events and for public activities and programmes.

Mission

To deliver programmes to further constitutional education and to provide a platform for relevant public dialogue

While some people have had the experience and privileges of visiting this historical site for educational purposes I have been blessed to witness this venue while been graced with musical talents like no other. “In The City” presents FKJ was truly a experience worth every penny.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes
Historical apartheid black male prison in the hills of hillbrow turned tourist attraction site. It's sites are easily accessible with well maintained infrastructure for the general public including the disabled. It's main attractions are the style of architecture including the great African stairs and concrete slabs around the precinct A pick up location for citysightseeing for tourists and travel enthusiasts

The precinct consists of the Mandela Gandi prison museum. A place of horror restored to show how appallingly the Black people were treated. Just next door is the Constitution Court. Full of information and amazing art. It's definitely a place to see.Wait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
A very interesting place to visit. Lots of history telling the truth about South Africa's development over the centuries. Site guides are well versed with telling the story. Place is well kept with lots of security in view. Unfortunately the outside perimer is not maintained. This is the very first view of the precinct, but unfortunately a very poor exhibition - see photo. Wall trimmings are either missing or not affixed to the wall.
The former prison complex houses a museum about its past and the central part is home to the South African costitutional court. It is a very interesting area and worth a visit. In the building of the constitutional courts were some art exhibits when I visited. The staff is very helpful and friendly.
As heartbreaking as it is to remember SA's past because it is still very much part of the present...the Constitutional Hill has done a great job of preserving part of the history and sharing it with the world. I am proud to be a part of the construction team that built the monument, mostly responsible for air-conditioning drawings back in 2002/3 . We have come a long way. Tours are every hour from 9h00-16h00 for R120p/p. Lots to see and learn, from the prisons, the living conditions, the food, menus, ablution and shower blocks...and then the Constitutional Court itself. It would be wise to park in the precinct parking because it is quite a walk from the basement parking already before the 1hr guided tour.
History of the prison as well as the current Constitutional Court i.e. Supreme Court of South Africa. Tastefully presented.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
African experience at the Baseline festival. Interesting musical Acts local and international!
This place is full of history and I am always in awe of it when I visit. There is a well run tour system, all the guides are well informed and friendly. I have been there several times and each time I discover something new about this beautiful country of ours. A portion of the tour covers new and old artworks as well. A number of artists exhibit their work within the court.
