"Wits Art Museum is home to an extraordinary collection of African art, including contemporary and historical art from South Africa and art from West and Central Africa. The museum is one of Johannesburg's premier tourist attractions, along with the Apartheid Museum and Constitution Hill. It is part of the Wits University Cultural Precinct and just three blocks from Nelson Mandela Bridge. WAM is in the hip, regenerating area of Braamfontein, which is also home to many students, interesting shops and places to eat. The WAM Cafe is a fun place to meet friends and enjoy delicious food and coffee.Operating Hours: Tuesday to Saturday, 10h00 - 16h00.Entrance is free but donations are welcome.Closed on public holidays."

First and foremost, they have great staff at the art Museum that's also very welcoming. Additionally, the artwork was beautiful. Although I don't know much about art, for some reason, I expected more. Altogether, I had great experience, and I would highly recommend it. I would definitely come visit the museum again.
I really liked the section where you can add your own art to the wall with other people's drawings. It's a fun small-group experience 3-6 friends.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot sure

A major part of the Wits Art Museum WAM is to make it’s important collections of African art available to the public. Within its walls, the pace of life slows down while hundreds of thousands pedestrians, cars, taxis and buses pass hurriedly outside its glass walls. It’s a pleasing contrast to experience. It’s on corner Jorissen and Bertha Streets in Braamfontein. The bright costumes at the entrance attracted me immediately. I stood at the window looking in longingly. A security guard asked me if I wanted to go inside. The doors were closed. I eagerly replied “Yes please”. The current exhibition is titled “Seen, Heard and Valued” and it celebrates 40 years of the Standard Bank African Art collection. It is beautiful. The museum also publishes books about their major exhibitions and the collection of books about past exhibitions is on sale. There was a group of young primary school kids they looked around 7 whose voices and curiosity made the atmosphere so joyful and light. The staff were really welcoming, conversational and well informed. This was an unexpected well spent morning meandering through the museum at 10:30 am on a random Tuesday. Grateful. All COVID protocols observed.
Fantastic experience at the live exhibition today. We primarily saw Christine Dixie's exhibition BluePrint for the DisOrder of Things. Loads of big spaces to meander through. The museum is well organised and we will welcomed by a friendly, bubbly lady who told us about the museum and the exhibit. Lots of "interesting" for the art loving! I parked on the street outside the museum. Wits student can access for Wits Theatre. There was also parking in the blocks around the Museum. This was Saturday afternoon. Mellow space in the city - we walked around afterwards to find coffee/hot chocolate and something yummy. See my review of JFF Rooftop Garden Farm - a coffee shop oasis around the corner. Museum + coffee shop = Yum yum for soul and body!
I always enjoy a visit to WAM. The exhibitions are well curated and the space is just lovely. It’s not so big that you get gallery fatigue, yet there’s always a lots to see. The walkabouts and activities around an exhibition are always worthwhile. I love that we have this centre of excellence in our city. The only drawback is that parking is scarce.
Lovely art museum with both old and new pieces. I love the idea that they give first priority to their students to exhibit. The museum is free so anyone is welcome to visit. The lady in charge was a lovely host and gave us a bit of background about the art before we were left to explore.
Really great catalogue of art. I thoroughly enjoyed the emersion of being surrounded by such rich cultural history. I would definitely recommend visiting.
Beautiful and huge collection of art and sculptures. The place is very clean and spacious
