About

The South African Rock Art Museum
Southern African Rock Art, San Heritage, Human Evolution, Stone Tools, and more.

Description

Africa is where our ancestors evolved. It’s only fitting then that the bustling metropolis of Johannesburg, South Africa, is home to the Origins Centre.

Ceremoniously opened by former president Thabo Mbeki in 2006, the Origins Centre is a world-class museum dedicated to the exploration and celebration of humankind, telling the story of the emergence of human beings and humanity in southern Africa.

Conceptualised by a team of academics and designers from Wits University, the museum aims to provide visitors with a unique experience of Africa’s rich and complex heritage.

In addition, the Origins Centre houses an extensive collection of southern African rock art in collaboration with Wits University's Rock Art Research Institute (RARI). Visitors are thus afforded the fantastic opportunity to learn about the earliest images made by humans, and witness southern African rock art - recognized by many as comprising some of the most beautiful and complex rock art in the world.

Combining cutting-edge technology with the creative vision of some of South Africa’s foremost artists, exhibits take visitors on an extraordinary voyage of discovery, which begins with the origins of humankind in Africa, and progresses through the history, symbolism, and technology associated with the various traditions of southern African rock art.

The permanent museum exhibit begins with the oldest aspects of the human past. A favourite of this part of the journey features casts of hominid fossils discovered in South Africa and focuses on the contribution that these fossils have made to understanding the development of humankind. The exploration then continues, showing how the diverse southern African rock art traditions – the world’s oldest continuous art forms – have been treated differently at various points in history, contrasting colonial ideas with with the re-discovery of these ancient masterworks in a contemporary world.

The Origins Centre seeks to restore the African continent to its rightful place in history – at the very beginning of mankind’s journey to humanity.

The Origins Centre is also home to a vast array of palaeoanthropological, archaeological and genetic exhibits that chart the origins of humankind. These include ancient stone tools, artefacts of spiritual significance to early humans, and examples of the region’s striking rock art.

Visitors to the Origins Centre can expect to follow an 80 000-year path in search of the art and culture that has inspired human innovation, as well as delve into the fascinating beliefs of the ancient San, experiencing ritual such as hunting and the trance dance.

The average museum experience takes between 90 minutes and two hours, but for the enthusiast, there is an unsurpassed wealth of additional multi-media material detailing Africa’s past.

Audio guides come with the price of admission and are available in six languages – Zulu, Sotho, English, Afrikaans, French and German.

Amazing Museum. Has replicas of skulls of human species, short films, and tells you about the discoverers. I found it amazing that information was dedicated to San discoverers as well, even though there were no pictures of some of them. The museum will make you feel something emotional, not just educate you, and it's quite large so dedicate a few hours to see everything. I wish I could've spent more time. I was expecting a small exhibition since it was in a university, but now I regret not being able to take my time at each display. Also entrance was free for me as I'm a student and it was the wits parade. I want to go again.
Very interesting experience. The short videos and movies went a long way to explain many of the information and exhibits. The artifacts were very interesting to look at and read about. Overall this was a great experience for an tourist or local. Small cafe onsite.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes
I came here with a group. Our tour guide was incredibly knowledgeable and the displays are great. I would have liked to go back afterwards to absorb more detail, but I had another engagement to attend. On my next visit I'll allow myself more time.Visited onWeekendWait timeUp to 10 minReservation recommendedNot sure
What a fascinating and informative place with excellent and enthusiast guides. The exhibition is well presented but to get the most out of it, go on a guided tour and it 1.5 hours well spent. We went for the ancestors DNA sample and with the excellent talk and guides tour, let's see what our background tells us. Plenty of parking weekends and an on site coffee/snack shop and the place seems popular with kids doing some archeology events when we visited
That was quite an intriguing encounter. The brief films and cinematic pieces effectively elucidated a multitude of facts and displays. It was quite captivating to view and learn about the artifacts. In general, this proved to be a wonderful encounter, whether for a visitor or someone familiar with the area. Onsite cafe, petite.
What a beautiful place to visit and be reminded where we come from. Our origins, our ancestors and how far we have come. The things we need to remember and retain because progress does not mean you abandon everything that is old. It simply means you progress while you take some of what is good with you like treating the earth as part of who we are and not this extraction based relationships we have come to have with her. While also being reminded of Ubuntu. The rock art is well preserved and there is such peace in there.
World class exhibition. Incredible display. The San exhibition is done very well. Great for kids aswell. Allow at least half a day. Lovely coffee shop and food.
You could spend an entire day at the Wits Origins Centre Museum with so much of information at your access. The staff are passionate about what they do and always willing to share information and assist you. Definitely a place worth taking children to, and in the process increasing your knowledge too. A gem with many impressed international tourists. Private companies should consider assisting with funding to expand this museum.
Great place to visit and learn about South African archaeology, rock art and paleontology. You will find some extremely amazing artefacts here.
My trip to this Museum was, educational, informative and soul filling. In a nut shell it was very rewarding to visit and stand in a place that had so much Black history and artifacts representing the origin of human kind. Loved it
