A decent museum located on relatively safer part of Johannesburg, New Town. Kids will enjoy. They have an interesting “photography” section with information on early photography technology from the 19th century. There are also some good Apartheid era articles of interest. Do visit!
We came here to learn more about Africa. The building is large and cold. Some of the artifacts they have on display were not very interesting. It seemed like more of the same you'd see anywhere, nothing spectacular. I did find the small section on Zulu looked great. The other area of interest was the Shanty home area because it allows one to visually and physically step into one and hopefully empathize with those that currently live in one, then question why they do. This was quite intriguing. Other than that, we didn't spend much time here.
Nice museum regarding traditions, culture and als natural features. Unfortunately not too well maintained. In the uppermost level there's a rather big exhibition regarding photography and videography including old cameras, I highly recommend this part especially for technically interested individuals.
Ntate Sam was very helpful, assisting us with questions we had for school projects..Visited onWeekendWait timeNo wait
My visit was so pleasant. I had no idea it was as huge as it is because from the outside it looks quite average. I came across so many historical events that I never thought had happened. It is an amazing and fitting place to bring people who are willing to learn about African history, from politics to entertainment. I thoroughly enjoyed and recommend you amazing people to visit. It's open Tuesdays - Sundays from 9:00 - 17:00 except Good Friday.
I love this museum! It's huge and keeps you occupied with loads of entertaining information and exhibitions. It's special and highly accessible as the entrance is also FREE Thank you for this great public space Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Rich history, rich geology and different cultures of SADC countries...recommended outing for school going kids... ohh yah for the photographs fanatics, there is a whole world class collection I history of phothos and different equipments... overall really great
Must see, but the building is sadly not well maintained and the roof was leaking rainwater onto the collections. Also, I would love to see more about precolonial South Africa. The apartheid museum does a very good job of covering apartheid, and that part of the museum was hard to follow and didn't provide extra context to the materials presented photos were presented without names, newspaper clippings are presented without context of why they were selected. This is a very important museum for Johannesburg, and with more funding, could be stellar. So, go see it, and support it!!!

Based in Newtown, on my last visit the Museum Africa was host to the South African Book Fair. The spacious interior has historic details which were carefully restored, and a spacious interior with easy viewing from the sloping ramp. Especially photography enthusiasts will enjoy the historic photographs lining the walls, as well as camera equipment from a previous era. Opposite the entrance, there is a large uncovered parking area, and at the back of the museum is the Market Theatre. Walking a bit further will take you to an adjacent small shopping mall with undercover parking.
