Himeville Fort and Museum

About

A rural museum, reputed to be among the best rural museums in South Africa, Himeville Fort and Museum offers a wide range of exhibits.

Description

The museum is housed in the old stone fort or laager started in 1896 by the Border Mounted rifles after the LeFleur Rebellion of 1895. Completed in 1899 it was taken over by the Natal Mounted Police and turned into a prison by the addition of the warders house and magistrates court along with a number of cells. An open air exhibition of settler and agricultural history is surrounded by a number of display rooms housing themed exhibits and displays covering rock art, traditional crafts, natural history, military history amongst many others.

Very interesting museum. So well put together a real trip back in time. The curators have done an amazing job replacating the different rooms. Also beautiful displays with lots of information. Thank you for all your hard work.

Being a prison guard myself was good to see the history of this place that once was a prison
Very nice museum. There where so much to see with such a rich history of what happened there. The detail they put into displays is so good and each display tells its own story. Will defnilty take my kids there one-day when they are old enough to appreciate the history of this lovely museum.
What a great museum to visit. Everything is well displayed and really giving you a sense of the history of the area.
Our visit to this museum was not planned in advance, it was just a spur-of-the-moment decision and we are very happy we made the trip! Unassuming from the outside, we did not expect to see such a well-curated and well-stocked collection of artefacts as we walked in. The museum was clean, tidy and organised; you are sort-of guided along by yourself with signs and descriptions giving you important titbits as you move along. The most moving exhibition had to have been the war memorabilia room. Poems on the walls, war soundtracks playing in the background and a good balance between informative and emotive. Another little fact we found interesting was that the museum is built in an old laager; the last laager or fort to be built in South Africa.
This is a very well kept Museum. Very interesting. A must visit. The reception was very friendly. Nice knowledgable lady that guided us.
This was a memorable experience. It's always enjoyable to go back into the past and use your imagination for things like these. My friends and I really enjoyed ourselves.
