The East Griqualand Museum in Kokstad is a wonderful place to visit. The collection of local historical items is engaging, and they have been beautifully displayed. However, when I visited, the staff were not very friendly, and did not even attempt to curate the experience. If it were not for the wealth of information at each display, it would in fact have been a very disappointing experience. The facilities are kept in a good and clean condition, but there did not appear to be any extra effort made to be wheelchair friendly. Parking space is very limited, but the area does not seem to experience an influx of other vehicles that would take up available parking for the museum. If you are planning on taking a group of children for a school outing, try to go a day or two before the outing and familiarize yourself with the exhibits so that you can act as the guide through the museum. All in all, it was a great experience to learn about the beginnings of this little town, albeit as my own curator. If they could just get this one point right, I feel it would change the entire experience and turn it into a most memorable one
The museum has some very interesting artefacts on display and there's lots of information to go through. However it's quite run down and there's no staff on hand to help you make the most of your visit there.
