Madikwe Game Reserve

Description

The Madikwe Game Reserve is a protected area in South Africa, part of the latest park developments in the country. Named after the Madikwe or Marico River, on whose basin it is located, it was opened in 1991 and comprises 750 km² of bushland north of the small town Groot-Marico up to the Botswana border.DescriptionMadikwe Game Reserve lies 90 km north of Zeerust on what used to be farm land, but owing to the poor soil type, farming was not that successful. After extensive research, the South African Government found that this land would best be utilised as a national park, to economically uplift this otherwise rather poor area. The process reintroducing wildlife to the area began in 1992 under the codename Operation Phoenix which relocated entire breeding herds of elephants, Cape buffaloes, south-central black rhinos and southern white rhinos along with various species of antelopes. Following Operation Phoenix, Madikwe has also successfully reintroduce rarer predatory species such as Transvaal lions, South African cheetahs, spotted hyenas and Cape wild dogs bringing the total large mammal population of the reserve to over 10 000. There are currently more than 60 species of mammal in the park.

A fantastic park, unfortunately a bit expensive as there are not so many hotels, but this is even better for the animals :- If you are lucky you can see the charming wild dogs, this is a unique experience. We really enjoyed the 6 nights and we would definitely go again. Can also be visited with children as it has no malaria.
5 Stars - Definitely a must go when you are in South Africa! This is a relatively new park, turned from farmland in 1991 occupying areas as big as around 70% of Hong Kong. It’s not the biggest in South Africa but to be honest who could finish exploring the whole park if you only stay for say a week? The park is less well known than the most famous one but it truly is a hidden gem given its animal variety and the professional rangers/workers/staff. Believe me - the experience of escaping from a huge city and staying at a safari dedicating the time to track animals and just watch them doing the same things repeatedly do provokes a lot of thinking and reflection.
One of the best game reserves is South Africa. You are almost guaranteed-to see Elephants and on most game drives you will see 4 of the big 5. Easy to fly in with Fed-Air from Johannesburg and plenty of lodges to choose from. Beautiful sunsets and that true African feeling can be felt every day you spend in the Madikwe Game reserve. Although you are allowed to self-drive from the gate to the lodge where you will be staying, you aren't allowed to go out on game drives on your own. However this is a big positive as less vehicles mean the game sightings are less crowded. This is a Big 5 reserve and we were lucky enough to see 2 cheetahs, but unfortunately we didn't spot a leopard. The park is vast with different landscapes ensuring you will never be bored, and the lodges we stayed at Motswiri and Royal Madikwe were awesome. If you are driving to the lodge on your own, rest assured that the gravel roads are of good condition - the small hatchback we used was good enough to get us there and back safely. Be sure to respect the animals when driving though, as you are in their territory. While driving between the 2 lodges we came across a big elephant in the road. We kept our distance, turned off our car en enjoyed the moment - not much more you can do except be patient.
