Located in the heart of South Africa’s iSimangaliso Wetland Park World Heritage Site. Visitors have access to vast wetlands, wild undeveloped beaches and Big 5 game viewing in sunny KwaZulu Natal.

Makakatana aims to be your home away from home. Built in a forest on the banks of Lake St Lucia, this 4 star lodge features 5 private suites, 2 family suites and one honeymoon suite. The lodge is frequented by the local wildlife
where you can enjoy the sights and sounds of Africa from the moment you arrive.

The lodge is easily accessible and only a 2h30 drive from Durban airport or 1h00 drive from Richards Bay. Road Transfers can be booked.

Awesome stay with family atmosphere. If you want a unique experience between Hippos, this is it. Not a big 5 reserve, but incredible nature with quite some wildlife. We enjoyed every minute in the hotel and on safari. Thanks to the hotel and safari team for making it really special!
This is such a magic place, beautifull accomodation, peacefull surroundings, beautifull lush nature, animals walk up to your room and to the beautifull pool deck. Big 5 on one side from the dunes, unspoiled ocean on the other side. The food and ambience are amazing. Very warm and friendly owners and staff.
We nestled on the edge of the beautiful Lake St.lucia. Makakatane Bay Lodge stands as your best treat to your private holiday. This private lodge can be one of your best Getaways in KwaZulu-Natal coast with lush evergreen forest ,abundant birdlife and wildlife. Today there had been more relocation of Big Game that was once went extinct in the Park,such as Elephant,Oribi and many more. There is also full set of African Big game except for Lion. Staff is well informative,helpful and friendly. I would recommend many to try Makakatane. Rooms: Rooms and ablution are of extremely good quality and clean. Nearby activities: Lodge got their own Game safari and boat cruise activities with excellent guides, but can also outsources birding watching activities from the nearby St.lucia & Birding Safety: The Lodge is within iSimangaliso Wetland Park with a very strong security measures. Visitors can use intercom to access the lodge in and out Food & drinks: Lodge is a B&B sort of and will provide most of the amenities,beverages, etc Noteworthy details: It's so important to arrange with the lodge for transportation arrangements if you are not using their shuttle services. Also for Park gates times and shopping times outside the lodge.
Makakatana Lodge is absolutely amazing! We stayed for three nights and enjoyed the beautiful surroundings where the lodge is situated. The staff is very friendly, food excellent and the rangers very knowledgeable. Don't miss the boat trip on St. Lucia lake. We felt so at home, it was hard to say goodbye.Rooms: 5/5
Absolutely magical! Delicious 3 course meals under the stars and twinkling fairy lights in the boma, sparkling pool overlooking the lake and air-conditioned luxury rooms with outside showers and baths. Friendly staff that left nothing to be desired. Christa, Bongani, Mnoto - thank you for making our stay an absolute dream! We will definitely be back
Top class and definitely the best lodge in the area. Great for honeymoon couples as well as families with slightly older kids. This seems to be a popular destination for tourists looking for an upmarket 'all in one' venue sea, beach and bush. Highly recommend!

What a Safari experience ! The staff at the lodge, Jaco and Warwick our guides were perfect. Busy game schedule but a must to have the chance to see the wild life out there. We stayed in the honeymoon suite with amazing view on the bush and wetland sounds. A must experience Makakatana lodge.
Wonderful experience. Lodge and staff are amazing. Attention to detail, fine cuisine and nothing is too much trouble attitude enhanced our experience. Definitely worth a visit.
Stayed here in August with a family of 6. It was amazing! Food fantastic, scenery wonderful, animals exciting and the staff was downright incredible and the most impressive guide.
