Description

The Pilanesberg National Park is a sought-after wildlife destination in a malaria free area, adjacent to Sun City. See the Big Five just 2 hours from Johannesburg and Pretoria in one of the country's most popular wildlife areas. Set in an ancient volcanic crater, this well-stocked reserve has a dramatic landscape that supports a wide variety of plants, animals and birds. The park hosts almost every large mammal of southern Africa, including the Big Five – lion, elephant, buffalo, rhinoceros (white and black) and leopard. The only indigenous southern African mammals that are not found in the park are bontebok, blesbok, spotted hyena, nyala and Roan antelope. Springbok, brown hyena, the red eyed bulbul and camel thorn trees usually found in arid areas are found cohabitation with moist-area-limited impala, black eyed bulbul and Cape chestnut trees. Other mammals that are found in the park include zebra, brown hyena, giraffe, hippo, wild dog, crocodiles and a host of antelope species. Other cats such as caracal and leopard are also found in the park. Bird viewing is excellent with over 360 species having been recorded. The crater of an ancient, long extinct volcano gave birth to the Pilanesberg National Park, with rare rock types and structure rating amongst the world’s most outstanding geological phenomena. The park is surrounded by three ridges or rings of hills with a formation that rises from the surrounding plains, called the “Pilanesberg National Park Alkaline Ring Complex”. The early presence of man can be seen in numerous Stone and Iron Age sites that were discovered throughout the park. One can travel through the park in a standard road vehicle, as although most of the 188km’s of track are not yet surfaced, they are well maintained. The three main tarred roads are Kgabo, Kubu and Tswene. There are several camps serving the park from the outside, such as Bakgatla and Manyane, with several private lodges situated within the park itself. Towards the centre of the park is an artificially constructed lake called the Mankwe Dam, and Thabayadiotse, which means “the proud mountain”. Accommodation in and around the Pilanesberg National Park range from exclusive safari lodges to caravan and camping sites. Most lodges are child friendly. Pilanesberg conferencing are very popular, as it is merely a 2 hour drive from Johannesburg. Special teambuilding exercises can also be arranged. All the Pilanesberg resorts and lodges require a minimum two night stay over weekends (Friday and Saturday nights). Visitors are offered many opportunities to experience the wonders of the Pilanesberg National Park. There are 188 kilometres of good quality roads for either self-drives or guided game drives, and professional guides operate within the park. Numerous hides and scenic picnic sites are also available. The following activities can be booked in and around the Pilanesberg National Park: Scheduled Daily Game Drives; Private Game Drives; Game Drive and Bush Braai’s or Breakfasts; Hiking Trails; Predator Park Tours; Hot Air Balloon Safaris; Quad Biking; Clay Pigeon Shooting; Archery; Paintball and Drumming.

My second trip and really worth the trip, beautiful landscapes and saw many different animals. There are lookout points with clean toilets which is the only place permitted to get out of your vehicle due to the wild animals. I can't wait to go again. Restrooms: Clean for the bush, water not drinkable though.
Early 5:00 a.m. morning Safari It's chilly but definitely beautiful. I was able to capture some sunrises and sun settings. The animals were exceptionally a lifetime experience and I am so grateful I was able to experience it. The tour guides were exceptionally knowledgeable and I thank them all.
I absolutely love this place. If you love safari, I would recommend this place over Kruger National Park any day. Instead of being faced by ridiculous prices and long drives just to see nothing. You'll find this place booming with wildlife! You'll have a great chance of seeing the Big 5, and it's close to Sun City if you have an itch to go to the casino! Reasonable prices, great facilities, and a park that caters to wildlife enthusiasts! What more do you want? The only thing to be careful with is the overpriced "African" art produced by factories elsewhere being constantly pushed on you at the gates. It's a huge scam for your money so be careful! Rather, support the park by buying inside! Playground: There are places for children to play in the safe areas as well as places to eat! Restrooms: The restrooms are extremely clean!
Such a great place, first time going there and i managed to see a good bit of the animals. Got over charged at the main restaurant but only realized after but great place to go to.
I love nature and seeing wildlife in its natural state such as seen in Pilanesberg and it has some breathtaking views, but we were let down by a few things. The roads are in a horrible state, both tarmac and dirt, and some facilities/picnic spots are either rundown or without water so the toilets are badly clogged and the smells are unpleasant. It would seem that every time we visit things are worse, but this time I had to say something. Management, can you please look after this gem and restore my confidence in this place, it has so much potential, but we are let down by those in charge, volunteers and people who help can only do so much. I regret not always having my phone with me for better pictures, but I can at least show the beauty of some animals. Dog-friendliness: Not pet friendly. This is the wilderness, no place for pets
We visited the park through a morning excursion in connection to our hotel. Although it was a fairly overcast day we saw four out of five of the Big Five. The only one we did not see was a Cape Buffalo. Since we were on a tour we had limited time and mobility. If we were on a self- guided tour we possibly would have seen even more wildlife.
Had an amazing three days, saw everything you could possibly think of. Lion, leopard, cheetah, rhino and elephant. Accommodation at Bakubung Bush Lodge fantastic. Food and people amazing.
One of my favorite Reserves so sad to see the roads are in such a bad condition and "ready mix tat" just lying wasted on the road side. Still a nice vist but would not recommend going in a small car.
Excellent place to drive and enjoy the South African Savannah while patiently hoping to see the Big 5. We saw most if them on our day out, and had a great time, however we were there the whole day, so there are no guarantees. All that noted: One feels they could put a little more effort into the facilities.
Great guide allowed us to really enjoy the drive. With so many different animals it's a great place to see animals for the first time. Would really recommend for a visit.
