Pionier Museum

Description

Pionier Opelug Museum, is a cultural and "living" museum in the eastern suburbs of Pretoria that reflects the lifestyle of early pioneers or "Voortrekkers" of the early 19th century. It is housed in the oldest building in Pretoria, the 1848 House, and the museum is operated by Ditsong Museums of South Africa.MuseumThe museum is a "living museum" so in other words the guides and the visitors are meant to experience the museum as if they lived in the early 19th century and the guides are clad in period dress. Activities include traditional bread making and butter churning and presentations of "Voorlaaier", Afrikaans for "Front-loading" musket, firing and reloading. The main tour of the museum follows the history of the 1848 House and the people who inhabited the original farm called "Hartebeestpoort". The surrounding gardens are stocked with a traditional herb and vegetable garden where one can learn about Voortrekker "Boereraat" or "home-remedies", an orchard, a furnished period wagon house and a vineyard.Events A New Year's Festival is held on 1 January every year in the museum complex. There are also regular farmer markets held at the museum called the Pretoria Boeremark.1848 HouseThe fittingly named 1848 House is the main building of the complex and was built in 1848 by early Voortrekker pioneers using traditional methods, it is the oldest man made structure still standing in the city of Pretoria. According to the website the house's specifications are: "The house was built of clay and local materials, with a thatched roof and earthen floors, and is furnished in the traditional 19th century rural style."

The place gives you a natural atmosphere. The air you breathe is from natural grass and trees. My residential area is surrounded by industries so to me is really refreshing
A very unique car show for the Japanese Import car fans. Featured old classic and more modern vehicles and vintage motorcycles. A cash bar was available and plenty of fast food was on sale. Professionally organized by The Pretoria Old Motor Club.
Clean and neat. Friendly staff. Safe. Lovely jewel.Visited onWeekendWait time1 hr+Reservation recommendedNo
Since Covid the museum deteriorated. The animals are mostly gone, there are no actors. Guided tours are sometimes available but often not, when I visited I paid R50 to see a few buildings and some sheds. There was no information on any of the exhibits. I understand the museum collection is being moved to other sites. Really it wasn't worth going.
We recently had a year end function at this venue. It is a large spacious area. The staff there were very helpful and efficient. They also made sure that all social distancing rules and regulations were kept by everyone there. There were ample parking available. It was a good time we had lots of fun despite all the restrictions. I would definitely use this venue again
Not bad for my first visit
A true piece of the Afrikaans culture. A must see for the history lovers.
Nice place to chill. Just put extra lights for night purposes.
