Tshukudu Bush Camp

About

Situated in the Central Lowveld near the Blyderiver Canyon and adjoining the greater Kruger National Park near Hoedspruit. We are Wheelchair friendly and welcome schools for bush education and veldschools.

Description

Tshukudu Game Reserve was started in 1980 on what used to be a cattle ranch. Although many antelope species as well as giraffe were already on the property a variety of animals had to be reintroduced. One of the first were rhinoceros hence the name "Tshukudu" which means "rhino" in Sotho.

Today, Tshukudu is teeming with game, the birdlife is prolific and the bush has reverted to its pristine state. The many Acacia and Marula trees give a real feel of the African Bushveld.

Ian and Sylvia Sussens built up the Self Catering Bush Camp and the environmental educational camps.

After Ian's passing away in 2010, Sylvia and her son - David continue to run the business. David has inherited his Dads passion for the bush and loves to share his deep understanding of nature with all the visitors, children and adults alike.

Lovely place to stay. Very friendly and accomodating staff. Had a great time bonding with other guests but also having some good time to ourselves just to relax. Atmosphere is relaxed and peaceful. The lookout deck is really awesome too. Noteworthy details: Water is safe to drink but the taste is not for everyone. Bush walks with Richard were very educational and informative. The game drives were also good fun we did the 15:00 one which ran into dusk and early evening hours. Richard finding chameleons should be considered a super power
We didn’t stay here but we happily would next time ! Went on a Game Drive with David and it was hands down one of the best Game Drives I have ever experienced . David is so knowledgeable, he will truly educate you on the animals and their habitat . You can see he is passionate and truly cares . The private reserve itself is beautiful. Plenty of animals around and beautiful lions. We are sad we couldn’t stay for more days and I believe it would be an amazing experience to go on Safari Walks and do other activities they have to offer . Next time we come we will definitely stay here .
Highly recommend staying here. This family-run camp provides an intimate encounter with nature in a comfortable environment. Morning walks with David are so unique. He can track the animals by their footprints, hair, or sounds. He knows all the animal alarm sounds and knows exactly what is happening in the park. They welcome you like family and are willing to do anything to make your stay more comfortable. We found the peaceful isolation romantic for couples, but it can also be a good place for families and large groups. The service is wonderful. Thelma helped us with the braai barbecue every night. If you bring the ingredients, she will help make the food and clean up after you. Beds were comfortable, rooms were spotlessly clean, showers were hot and with good water pressure. WiFi was good.
I was on a game drive for 2 days and this situation was really concerning. The female lion and the 2 male lions want to mate but Tshukudu has a fence that is preventing that from happening. They are starving there because they don’t go hunting, they are just hoping they are going to mate. They have been there for many days. Please put the fence down and you’ll eventually get baby lions. Everyone wins.
Tshukudu Bush Camp was the highlight of our two week trip in South Africa. We preferred the peaceful isolation of Tshukudu to the busyness of Kruger. Our guide, David, was incredible. He is a passionate and gifted naturalist who entertains and educates with stories about the plants and animals on the preserve. He knows the preserve like the back of his hand. We called him the Bear Grylls of South Africa. It's a real treat to spend time with the cheetahs that Tshukudu has rescued and is introducing into the preserve. The rooms and beds are comfortable and private. The WiFi works great. They can help you braai or cook whatever food you bring. So don't miss out on this incredible place. You will get a peaceful and unique safari experience that you can't match anywhere else. I only wish the marketing was better so that more people could enjoy this special place. Make sure you book the Bush Camp and not the Game Lodge, which is separate and will not include David. If you're staying elsewhere, you can still take a game drive with David each afternoon.
We highly recommend Tshukudo and would definitely return. David was an amazing guide sharing his knowledge and love of the animals and the land.
A home away from home. Some of my fondest memories are here beginning with Ian and Savannah and now carrying on through his sons and Savannah's first and only litter... its magical here
So peaceful, well run place to be! Staff were so friendly and helpful, at your needs virtually 18 hours a day! Game drives priceless and thoroughly enjoyable. Definitely returning soon! Photos to follow!
David is amazing very knowledgeable, always a pleasure listening to his passion for the bush. We had very good sightings sadly ran out of time. We had a really good drive most enjoyable
A great place, the guide was brilliant, full of knowledge and insight To see rhino's so close was fantastic, a great example of preserving a species by taking away the reason for poaching it. De-horning the rhinos may seem cruel, but it isn't painful to the beautiful animals and it takes away the reason for them to be seemingly needlessly slaughtered! They all looked happy to me This was only improved on by seeing, lions hippos and the animal I've always wanted to see, cheetahs, wow!
