West Coast Fossil Park

Description

The West Coast Fossil Park is a fossil park near Langebaanweg, Western Cape, South Africa, approximately north of Cape Town. The fossil sites of Langebaanweg have exceptionally well-preserved remains of fossil fauna that date to circa 5.2 million years ago. In this period sea levels were higher and many now extinct animals lived in the riverine forests, wooded savanna and along the sea coast near the present day Langebaanweg site. Phosphate mining operations at Langebaanweg uncovered these rich fossil deposits. The fossils include bones of over 200 different animal species. This represents possibly the greatest diversity of five-million-year-old fossils found anywhere in the world. The fossil park was formed after mining operations ceased in 1993. The park is partnered with the Iziko South African Museum. In 1996 the former National Monuments Council declared the site a national monument. With the introduction of the National Heritage Resources Act in 2000 it became a provincial heritage site and in March 2012 the provincial heritage resources authority, Heritage Western Cape significantly expanded the area that is protected.

Love this place! What a rare treat to get access to an actual dig site so rich in a diverse range of Fossils. The guides are very knowledgeable and willing to answer all questions. I have visited twice and I love it each time I go. There is also a restaurant and a museum.Food: 5/5
A very interesting place of interest. The buildings are very new and modern and very well kept. The staff are very helpful and friendly. There is a charge for self guided tour of the museum or a guided tour of the fossil tent. The walk down to the tent is via a gravel road in the hot sun, so dress accordingly. Visitors with disabilities can get a lift to the fossil site on the golf cart. Once at the site, there is a walkway that is wheelchair accessible. A small gift shop and coffee shop is available for your enjoyment. There is plenty of free parking.
The fossil park is a beautiful clean museum , its small and takes you maybe 30min to walk through and see all they have, the fossil dig sight is interesting and fun, but also small the tour guide was friendly and very informative. The restaurant had a lovely buffet , all staff were very friendly and it was a nice family outing, my kids enjoyed the information about the Extinct animals.
Fantastic surprise. Although the museum is still work in progress we still found it very informative. Tent diggings were fascinating, with a special thanks to our volunteer guide Hesmarie. Her enthusiasm and knowledge added to the overall experience. All other staff very friendly and helpful.
If you like fossils and just cool science things in general, this is the place to be! Did not have food, had something to drink, but was pleasant and the good smelled delicious!Food: 5/5
The fact that the restaurant is the featured photo says it all. There's a whole lot of not much to see, especially for the price. We were told that they're due for an upgrade, which will be paid for with Lotto grant money. However, at the rate that said grant money is being stolen by wealthy business people and government officials, I wonder if and when and to what extent these proposed upgrades will happen.
Great experience for the kids. Useful and very informative session with tour guide. Pity that it was loadshedding and we could not complete tour at the museum.
West Coast Fossil Park exceeded expectations. Tours are conducted every hour; it's recommended to check availability during peak holiday season. Arrive a little early and stroll through the very informative museum and display areas. We had tea and sweets at the cafeteria, excellent date fingers. A golf cart is available to take elederly down to the fossil site. Our guide, Edward, was very knowledgeable and explained on a level that was accessible to most. He gave a very balanced view of the impact and also the advantage that mining has had here. Had it not been for the mine, the fossils would probably have gone undiscovered. At reception, no mention was made of the walking trails; I only saw that afterwards on the pamphlet. Pity, I would have loved to go for a walk.
A pleasant experience had by all. Our first visit after the major upgrade of the West Coast Fossil Park. Beautiful wild flowers in season. Friendly staff all round. Tuk-Tuk driver Jan Coetzee was a gem with his knowledge of the Park and district. Vegetarian options: Menu has a wide variety. West Coast Chef School runs the Restaurant. Food was prepared to perfection. Delectable sweet options available. Kid-friendliness: The venue is young people friendly. Restaurant menu is adequate. The museum has a more somber atmosphere, kids must be under control of parents or teachers. It is a educational experience. Very interesting and educational. Worth a visit. Parking: Lots of parking. Tuk-Tuk Transport available for seniors Wheelchair accessibility: Yes. Wheelchair friendly. Lift in museum.
This is a wonderful afternoon destination to see and discover an interesting archeological exhibition of the west coast animal & marine fossils, dating back some 5 million years. This is a must-see for travel or museum addicts, local or international . . .
