Central Grocery & Deli

Story

Central Grocery is a small, old-fashioned Italian-American grocery store with a sandwich counter, located at 923 Decatur Street in the French Quarter of New Orleans, Louisiana. It was founded in 1906 by Salvatore Lupo, a Sicilian immigrant. He operated it until 1946 when he retired and his son-in-law Frank Tusa took over the operation. Today it is owned by Salvador T. Tusa, Salvatore's grandson, and two cousins, Frank Tusa and Larry Tusa. The store was one of many family-owned, neighborhood grocery stores during the early 20th century, when the French Quarter was still predominantly a residential area. Though tourists are more common in Central now, it has retained much of its old-world market feel. The Central sells not only the sandwiches as take-out or eat-in, but also the ingredients of the muffuletta—including olive salad by the jar—for people who want to make the sandwich at home. Because of the muffuletta, Central Grocery was featured on national television, in the PBS special program Sandwiches That You Will Like, and on NBC's The Today Show (five best sandwiches series).Central Grocery sells Italian, Greek, French, Spanish, and Creole table delicacies. They also carry less-mainstream selections, such as chocolate-covered grasshoppers and bumble bees in soy sauce, which are perennially displayed in the store's front windows. Marie Lupo Tusa, Salvatore's daughter, is author of the cookbook Marie's Melting Pot, which has hundreds of Sicilian, French, and Creole-style recipes.

This location is actually closed due to renovations but they have their famous muffalettas at the liquor store next door. You can purchase a full 4 pieces or half 2 pieces and they are huge! We got a full and could only eat half. It was delicious!!
One of the best muffuletta ever!! The bread was fresh along with all the meats. The olive relish spread made the sandwich unique. There was a line. Advise, look ahead of time so you know what items you want. Limited places to sit but we managed to find a spot.
It's been 20 years since I've been here and it's still an incredible muffuletta. We did get a little bit of ingredients from the grocery portion as well. Recommend getting here when they open.
I was visiting New Orleans for the weekend and a friend said we had to get a Muffuletta at Central Grocery… I’m SO glad we did! I loved it! We shared one between my wife, 3 kids, and myself. It was delicious and the workers were all so friendly and kind! I wish I could have one shipped home!!!
The Muffaletta is a New Orleans staple. Love this place!! Get some Zapps chips and an Abita beer with your sandwich and you're living the Big Easy!!
This was something I have always wanted and it was so worth it. We came all the way from West Texas. This is absolutely delicious and I can't wait till I can go in the next time we are in town
The original muffuletta! Worth a taste. Granted, it is very oily so prepare to taste a lot of salt and oil. No line in the mornings and on weekdays, with plenty of indoor seating and restrooms inside. Only docking one star because we expected the sandwiches to be prepared fresh but the counter guy had a huge stack of them sitting by him early morning with no one in the prep area so not really sure when they were actually made. Maybe they prep in advance in case of heavy demand, but on a non-busy day it would’ve been great to see them being made.
I was shocked to see Central closed... its been a staple of NOLA my entire life. Thankfully I got the story and my sandwich next door. There are temporarily closed to remodel but the famous muffuletta sandwich was able to be purchased at the store next door... so as usual Central did not disappoint. Hope to see you all reopen soon and best of luck.
I stopped by Central Grocery before I left New Orleans for a Muffuletta. My first time ever getting a Muffuletta or dining here. I got it to go so that I would have one last iconic food item from New Orleans. I got half of a Muffuletta and have one disappointment. I wished that I would have at least gotten a whole one. A great sandwich and a must if in New Orleans. I will get more the next time I am in town.
I’m a native resident Nola girl and I’ve been enjoying your muffulettas since childhood. Since your store has been closed it hasn’t been the same. I bought a few muffs from my local grocer Zuppardos and the last one I had was less than satisfying. I paid $25.99 for it and I said to myself “hmmm where’s the meat y’all?!!” It’s lacking some of the delicious cuts of meat I’m used to. So disappointed . Not sure if I’ll buy another one. I may just start making my own.
