There are VERY few family owned green/organic grocers in New York City. It's no accident that commodities has persevered over 2 generations and continues to serve a loyal following.

Want an alternative to Whole Foods? Come here. It's a smaller organic store, but for locals it's an easy place to go to for fresh organic veggies, and other healthy products. There's a great selection of snacks, beverages, gluten and dairy free products- some stuff which is hard or not possible to find elsewhere. In the back, there is a supplement and beauty section which has a good variety, but most useful is the staff who can help you make a selection. If you don't see someone, just as at the front. Seniors: ask for your senior discount at the register, every day! The only downside is that being a small place, aisles are ridiculously narrow, and items are stocked to the sky. There are grabber sticks around the store, but I suggest you bring your own if you have one, along with a reusable bag.
