It is a historical hotel, that accommodated many famous politicians. If you love history tis is the place to stay. That being said it is in the heart of the shopping area in Galena, which means very expensive to stay here. The rooms are not updated and not very spacious. The staff have been hit and miss. We asked for a fridge and they had one but because it would take a while to get cold thought it was a waste of time. We were staying for two days ( hotel policy requires 2 day minimum). She begrudgingly agreed. The small hairdryer in the room burned out, so the staff did hurry and bring up another one. Unfortunately that one didn't work either. We tried multiple outlets and hit the reset several times. Later that night we came back from walking and shopping and the room was stuffy. We had the air set as low as it would go, but it was only 72 in the room. This is an old hotel so some of that is understandable. The staff apologized and brought up a box fan. The fan made a huge difference and we slept like babies. The food was delicious and they do have a parking garage which is a major plus due to the location.

Stayed here while in town for a work conference which was also being held at the hotel. The Desoto House is takes pride in being the oldest operating hotel in Illinois. So for being an old hotel it is well maintained with modern amenities including free WiFi. The hotel staff is very friendly and helpful. The hotel has a bar and two restaurants. The hotel also hosts a happy hour daily from 5 til 7 and gives a complimentary drink to all guests staying at the hotel. The room I stayed in walk warm, inviting and well kept. I would stay here again if I have the opportunity.

We love to catch lunch at the DeSoto House Hotel.. best blue cheese soup around. Is wonderful to sit back in their dining room by the fireplace.
Staff are always Pleasant and food is delightful. We've eaten several times of an evening in the DeSoto House Restaurant in the lower level. It is beautiful and the food is wonderful. Romantic setting.

Great ambiance, but heavily antiquated. The old-time feeling is part of the draw, but it wasn't our favorite thing. Can't knock them for it, the place is well kept and objectively pretty! Food at the green street tavern was tasty too!
