John Harris-Simon Cameron Mansion

Story

The Simon Cameron House, also known as John Harris Mansion and the Harris-Cameron Mansion, is a historic house museum at 219 South Front Street in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Built in 1766 and frequently extended and altered, it is one of Harrisburg's oldest buildings, and is nationally notable as the summer residence of Simon Cameron (1799-1889), an influential Republican Party politician during and after the American Civil War. The house and family items were donated to the Historical Society of Dauphin County in 1941, which now operates it as a museum. The mansion was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1975, and is located in the Harrisburg Historic District.

We showed up on a day they weren't giving tours not realizing but we're vacationing in the area so didn't check. We stopped by the office to see if they could recommend any similar attraction. The woman said she was not an official tour guide but wanted us to see the house. She took us through and showed us everything and explained what she knew of the history. Our young children were with us so not getting a really long boring history lesson was just what we needed. What a great time we had on our private tour. The woman didn't want to charge us since she's not a guide. She could have fooled us. I googled the tour cost on me phone while we were finishing up and paid her the full cost. So grateful for her time. A wonderful asset to the property. We could tell she loves her job.

The guide for this house was very nice and very knowledgeable. It was interesting to learn some of the history of Harrisburg and the house was very nice. There is parking behind the house through a couple narrow alleys.
