Pennsylvania State Capitol Complex

Story

The Pennsylvania State Capitol is the seat of government for the U.S. state of Pennsylvania and is in downtown Harrisburg. It was designed by architect, Joseph Miller Huston in 1902 in a Beaux-Arts style with decorative Renaissance themes throughout. The capitol houses the legislative chambers for the Pennsylvania General Assembly, made up of the House of Representatives and the Senate, and the Harrisburg chambers for the Supreme and Superior Courts of Pennsylvania, as well as the offices of the Governor and the Lieutenant Governor. It is also the main building of the Pennsylvania State Capitol Complex. The seat of government for the state was originally in Philadelphia, then was relocated to Lancaster in 1799 and finally to Harrisburg in 1812. The current capitol, known as the Huston Capitol, is the third state capitol building to be built in Harrisburg. The first, the Hills Capitol, was destroyed in 1897 by a fire and the second, the Cobb Capitol, was left unfinished when funding was discontinued in 1899.

Theodore Roosevelt called it the most beautiful Capitol building in the US. I am so fortunate to be able to admire it on my daily commute! The Exterior. It's American Renaissance architecture is stunning: the dome, the marble sculptures at the main entrance, the court yard, the fountain... Its surrounding views are also marvelous: The front lines with the charming State Street all the way to the Susquehanna River. The north side borders the State Museum and State Archive. The south is integrated with the Capitol Park adjacent to the Strawberry Square. And the east neighbors the Soldiers' Grove overlooking the long array of street lamps. The Rotunda. It's a cardinal sin if you pass by the Capitol Building without going inside and behold the beauty and magnificence of the Rotunda. You don't even have to be in a tour and you can see it any day during the day time. The Tour. I don't know of any other tour that is as available as the tour of the Capitol Building. The free guide tours are conducted every 30 minutes M-F 8:30-4:00 and every 2 hour Sat-Sun 9:00-3:00. You get to see the Senate Chamber, the House Chamber, and the Surpreme Court Chamber. Though dwarfed compared to the grandeur of the Rotunda, each of them are impressive in its own right. The Senate Chamber in particular, features half dozens of enormous and ornate chandeliers, Greek Corinthian columns, green marbles, stained glass windows, and crowns and trims glazed in gold. I have not experienced seeing Senate in session though. Someday I will. Parking. There are plenty of paid street parking. You can download an app and deposit more money as needed remotely. $3 per hour is quite expensive. You can park at residents' zone permit parking for free between 10:00 and 3:00 if you can find one.

The tour was short with very little info, compared to others. The building itself was very nice! We have enough gold and precious materials in the capital to pay off the United States debts. The gift shops close early I didn't even get to see what they had. Not sure how that makes any sense. Being from the west coast I appreciated the older buildings over here.

I intern on campaigns sometimes, and most of my family works in the capital building. So, I really can't give this place a bad review. The guards are usually very nice, and the legislative health services director (aka the capital's nurse) is my mom, and I can tell you she's very nice.
