Beautiful drive through the mountains. No steep drops and a town and a few stores are located in the mountains. Road is good, elevation reaches over 8000 feet.

Love this place. Cool in the summer. Much cooler than being down in Alamogordo.

This is a very nice area. When I went there was old snow on the ground and it was a quite weekend but overall very nice to get out of town and see some small country areas instead of nothing but desert.

We stayed in the Apache Campground of Lincoln National Forest, outside Cloudcroft, NM. The campground was beautiful, if a bit over-regulated, even for me who used to be a Park Ranger. The thing about the Apache Campground and Cloudcroft is that it's a perfect escape for desert dwellers. On the way to Cloudcroft, we got into Alamogordo, which looked a lot like El Paso. According to our GPS, we were supposed to be at our destination in 15 minutes, but there wasn't a tree to be seen. Then we turned on 82 and started to climb. Roughly 5,000 feet of elevation later, we were in a cool, green forest. The transformation was amazing. Cloudcroft is a charming little place. Highly recommend.
