So we were making our rounds to the local mattress stores, looking for a new king mattress set to replace our 10 year old set at home. We walked in and immediately started scoping out the different beds, as the only salesman was busy with another couple. This is totally cool, as I don't like to be hovered over while I'm trying to discuss decisions with my husband anyway. The gentleman said he'd be with us shortly, which again, was totally fine. We begin sitting and laying on beds. We're asked if we have a price range in mind and we respond that we do not. (The comfort of the bed is more important than the price.) He goes back to his customers. A few moments later we are barked at from across the showroom to lay on the beds, as sitting on them doesn't tell you what it's like to sleep on it. This guy's tone was literally scolding, like you would use with a child.
First, let me say that sitting on a bed gives you an idea of edge support, so yes, you do need to sit on the mattress. Second, unless you want to flop onto a mattress, sitting is the first step. Please, don't bark at me about how to test a mattress. Strike 1.
As we are testing out a mattress that we both really liked, he begins asking what positions we sleep in. Husband is a side sleeper, I am a stomach sleeper. "Well you can't sleep on that mattress. It's too soft. You'll have back pain. Stomach sleepers need more support!"
I explain that, even as a stomach sleeper, I like soft beds. I am the type of person who likes to sleep in my mattress, not on top of it. He huffs and again points out that I will cause myself back pain by sleeping on a soft mattress. He points us to a different brand.
I am an adult. I do not need a lecture about what I want or need. I have been sleeping on soft mattresses for 30 years and have never had back pain, numb arms, or disturbed sleep. I know what is comfortable to me. But I try the mattress he suggests. Strike 2.
It is too firm, the springs can be felt just laying on it, and it jiggles and wiggles with massive amounts of motion transfer. I explain this and he points us to a different mattress before walking away. I did not like the other mattress either, so got up to try another. We we're then barked at again about how we have to lay down for 3 minutes.
Look, I get that. I do. But if I lay down and this thing is hard as a rock and not what I'm looking for, I'm not going to lay there uncomfortably for 3 minutes to appease someone else's ego.
He comes back and we repeat our sentiment that we like this softer mattress. He changes his tone and starts hedging, "Weeeellll...I just don't feel right about putting a stomach sleeper on a soft mattress, but if it's what you want..." STRIKE 3!
We wait for him to go back to the other customers and decide to try one or two more before moving on to different stores because we may find a brand/style we like regardless of our feelings about this ridiculous salesperson.
We made the mistake of laying on another bed, as we had tried a similar style and were comparing feel and materials. He breaks away from his customers to ask us what size bed we're looking for. We say king and we get another talking to because this is a closeout bed and he doesn't have it in a king, as if we can't even lay on it because we can't buy the size we want.
See here, dear sir. There is valuable information for me to take away from this bed, even if I can't buy this exact one, I can decide if I enjoy styles similar to it. Stop treating me like a child who needs to be corrected at every turn and doesn't know anything. You're not helpful, you're annoying and humiliating with your loud, know-it-all scoldings in front of God and everyone.
We had enough and left without saying a word. We went to literally every other mattress store in the area, with salespeople who were very lovely, and ended up spending $2,500.00 on a lovely hybrid mattress at Mattress Direct, just down the street. Which, by the way, we highly recommend! We won't go anywhere else from now on. Just stay away from this place at all cost!
