I went and tried out Butcher Block in Mall of the South. Yes the Mall is literally in the middle of nowhere, but I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. The mall itself is massive, with plenty parking space. The eating area is quite large, and houses all the main food places you can think of, including Butcher Block. On arrival the first thing you see is friendly welcoming staff – all smiles and willing to assist. The restaurant is clean and neat with quite an open setup. The menu, well all I can say is they have an extensive menu filled with so many great options and combinations of foods and flavours, that any picky eater will find something unless you vegetarian – sorry not sorry. If you can decide if you want, Meat or Chicken, or Prawns, there is a combo for all. We started off with the Panko Prawns, 3 Cheese Prawns, and the Roquefort Snails. All 3 meals got polished off. Perfectly cooked, sufficient starter portion, and delicious. 3 Cheese Prawns was lovely to dip and soak up all that lovely melted cheese creamy garlic & mascarpone cheese sauce topped with mature cheddar & grated parmigiana cheese. The Panko Prawns Malaysian Prawn tails coated in bread crumbs, deep fried & served with a sweet chilli sauce was crisp and freshly fried but needs a bit more of  spicy sauce, maybe a Spicy Mayo. The Snails, smothered in what I always call “stinky” cheese was a hit as my sister is a fan of Roquefort Cheese. So off to a really good start with the meals, and Robinson checking up on us. Such a wonderful staff compliment, everyone that came to assist us including Nosipho our waitress, were all so pleasant and helpful. It really does add to the experience. Next up mains, with so many things to choose from, I still couldn’t decide so I opted for a Combo – Ribs and Steak with…. Wait for it….. Pap and Chakalaka. My sister, ordered the Fillet Steak and Veg, and my mom decided she just wanted another starter and had the Prawn Cocktail. Food arrived, and wow, presentation was good, the smell from the food was heavenly. My Ribs were so tender, and I loved the basting, my Rump steak was cooked as per request, however I think I should have had the Sirloin, as it was slighty chewy but still good. The pap and chakalaka was a hit, just how I love it. Moms Prawn cocktail was good, she love it, and my sister loved her Steak and Veg, we even went as far as ordering more pap and chakalaka to take home, with a portion of Livers. Obviously there was no space for dessert, as I couldn’t even finish my meal, but I would highly recommend this spot to all meat lovers. Another great thing - the decent cutlery and glass ware is always a plus. Yes the mall is a million miles away, but on the bright side its filled with everything you need to do shopping wise, then you can chill have a cocktail and a great meal with fantastic service. Was here previously for lunch, and returned to have another delicious steak. They serve their steaks sizzling on a stone plate. The steak was delicious and tender and seasoned to perfection. I complemented mine with a garlic sauce, which was a bit mild - I like garlic, and would have preferred a bit more of it in the sauce. Good menu options, with a good drinks list. Good and attentive service from waitress, and a hands-on manager on duty.
Decent meal. I had the lamb chops, was a bit over cooked. Wife had a sirlon and she thoroughly enjoyed it.
The food is fantastic, and the manager is very involved and enthusiastic. Good service and lovely atmosphere.
R185 for steel and calamari combo....dismal portion and a manager with a bad attitude. Manager is in the photo I took - behind the counter and has glasses on. I ordered the calamari and rump steak combo.
We recently popped in for an early lunch and were pleasantly surprised by the stunning decor. On arrival, we were greeted by very friendly and helpful staff who showed us to our table. Because we got there a bit early we had to wait a few minutes for the kitchen to open, so we decided to pass the time and quench our thirst with a couple of cocktails They do have a really great wine list by the way. We had a Mojito and a G&T, both expertly prepared by the barman - I would come back for the cocktails alone. After extensively browsing the menu and debating what was good with the manager we decided on what we wanted to eat. We ordered the Camembert + Bacon Sirloin with a side of mash, and the Butcher Block Burger with a side salad. Both meals arrived after a short wait and were cooked to perfection with the steak being medium as requested something that doesn't happen that often. The quality of the food was evident from the two empty plates left on the table. Everything was really good and we will definitely be back to try some of the other items on the menu. This is a must do restaurant for sure.
The service was great, didn't wait long to receive our food. The waitresses was pleasant and friendly. I ordered the ribs and chops combo - my chops was dry and lacked taste. The ribs was nice. I ordered mashed sweet potato as my side but the taste was killed by lemon juice.
We came to try this steakhouse because of the entertainer app, and it didn’t disappoint. The steak was incredible, very tender and tasty. I had the fillet with veg and it was cooked to perfection. The manager was also friendly and accommodating. The only downside is the mall atmosphere when you sit outside. Other than that I would definitely say this has been one of the best steaks I’ve had in Joburg.
We recently visited for the first time. No beers on tap, no craft beers - an absolute must these days, even if you only stock a small selection. Many items for the cocktails were out of stock. The service okay, the food was good, but very expensive. At least the manager was friendly and helpful. Don't think we'll go there again. There are better restaurants for the same price.
Service : decent 5/10 Flavours: 7/10 Portion: 1/10 Affordability: $$$$ Had a huge craving for ribs, so ordered 1kg for R280. Got 8 ribs that were about 5cm... The customers next to us ordered ribs, and got a bigger portion!!! The brach in umhlanga has much better/bigger portions, how is that possible?
