About

Cape Town's Closest Big 5 Safari about 1 hour from the City Centre

Description

Fairy Glen Safaris, a family owned business about one hour from Cape Town, is set at the foot of the world famous Brandwacht Mountains.

It was the cherised dream of the latest owner Piet de Jager to transform the land into a big 5 game reserve, which was eventually realised through his commitment and dedication over the last years.

Fairy Glen's name is derived from the dragon fly who used to fly over the glen (valley) and was so big it resembled Fairies.

We had an amazing Valentines outing at Fairy Glen. The whole evening was well arranged and the crew really makes one feel welcome. The feeding of the elephants was obviously a real highlight, an experience to remember! The steak dinner was great! Sure, its not Kruger, but for being a privately run reserve they are doing a great job with their animals. Covid surely has left some marks on the business, but I would recommend a visit if you have the chance!
Definitely one of Cape Towns hidden Gems!!! Absolutely love the views , animals and warm welcoming staff and guides! Family friendly and chalets are so comfy i felt at home with a bonus view! Rooms: Rooms are so cozy and spacious with animals walking by. Also the warm fireplace. Best sunsets.
Great place to get away and relax. You get a real sense of "nature reserve". You can get up and close with many big animals.Rooms: 4/5
I stayed about 4 years ago. I cant wait to go back. One of the best trips I have ever been on. The food and employees and reserve were fantastic. Everything was 2 thumbs up
I'm so happy they decided to open their doors again... Might not have as many animals BUT the quality of the experience was amazing! I'm looking forward to my next visit!Rooms: 4/5
Enjoyed our outing here. The guide was personable and knowledge. It's not huge but it was interesting. The brochure said 2-3 hours and we went about 3 1/2 hours so we definitely got our money's worth. The food at the lodge was good and had a great variety. The surrounding mountains are beautiful and the drive from Cape Town was easy and filled with amazing landscape.
Arrived and it was a bit difficult to find out where to get our safari started but, we ended up in the right place. Started with a welcome drink and lunch meal does not include drinks. Ticket includes a 2 hour guided transport around the reserve to see the animals. A great time with Kenny our tour guide.
Very poor customer service. No regard for customer safety. My group of 9 adults made reservation for the morning tour. along with 12 other Caucasian visitors who also arrived for the safari tour. Only one vehicle was available therefore my party remained behind and another vehicle was due to arrive in 10 minutes. After complaining about the delay of one hour an open wrought iron truck used by the field workers arrived to take us on the safari. We refused to go because the vehicle was not the kind used for Safari. We would not be safe or protected from the animals if an accident occurred. No explanation was given. We requested to see the manager for a refund which we received. There was not enough breakfast for us because the caucasian group was first in line and we were told by the cook that no more food was available, only eggs. I had to ask her for bread. The breakfast was included in the cost of the tour. I believe my group was disrespected and treated in this manner because we're were black and they felt we did not know any better. Racism is still in existence in many subtle ways, and this was one of them. I would not recommend these people to black tourists because it was obvious that we were treated differently.
We had a fantastic game drive and afternoon experience at the Fairy Glen. We knew it was not the Kruger National Park, so did expect animals to be easy to find and used to the truck. The guide was really great and clearly loved nature and conservation. The lunch was lovely with a good variety and the views were beautiful from the lodge. Perfect no hassle, enjoyable trip.
We were a group of 4 people. We were very unlucky with the weather, it was raining and quite cold, 15 °C. They were not at all prepared for this conditions!! The car seats were soaking wet when the game drive started, the roof was dripping to the inside. They found us some plastic to put under and some blankets but still people were wet and freezing. Really bad!! : Positive points: nice drive, could get very close to the animals, awesome ranger Colin. Food, esp. lunch was OK, but there was no refill of the meat. Summary: value for money was not OK for us! Recommendation only for good weather conditions!
