Rogge Cloof is without exception the best accommodation in Sutherland and very likely for a hundred or more kilometers out. The staff at Rogge Cloof is nothing short of exceptional. I wanted to propose to my girlfriend under a starry night sky, and in South Africa Sutherland is the best place to do that. But the other accommodations in Sutherland left... a bit to be desired, being the rural area it is by design or otherwise. To this end, Rogge is not at all like its Sutherland competitors. I will never forget the peaty, whiskey smell of the Orion Units when we first walked in; the units were immaculate, clean, well designed, well furnished and comfortable- including a private deck for your own private stargazing experience if you desire. Especially at their price which I think is more than reasonable, they are unmatched- simple as that. As regards the proposal, they accommodated *ALL* sorts of requests from my end- working quietly behind the scenes to make sure that the moment would be as magical as possible for my now fiancé- and I can without question say that if it wasn't for their hard work and willingness to go the extra mile often literally - one of the most important memories in my life wouldn't have been a quarter as special. I have nothing but gratitude for this place, its night sky, and its people. Please support them, there are none more deserving.
I had such wonderful days and nights at Rogge Cloof. Stayed 3 nights in one of the Orion suites. The staff was amazing, I felt home far away from home from the first moment. Food was delicious and I could not believe they even had a wine cellar in the Karoo. Stargazing was amazing, too. This picture I made with my smartphone from my patio. I will definitely come back!
Roggecloof is something you can’t miss when coming to Sutherland. This is our third trip to Sutherland and our only regret is that we didn’t find Roggecloof sooner! The drive into Roggecloof was beautiful, you see the animals grazing and you can even see the telescope in the distance. We did wine tasting and dinner. The wine tasting experience is as awesome! The dinner was delicious! Every single bit was Amazing! It’s cold in Sutherland and there were fires set right by our dinner setting so you don’t feel the cold at all. I always say the little touches make an experience magical! From the time that I found them on Instagram to liaising with them about our visit was perfect. The warm hand towels when we arrived, to the personal tour of the premises and the things we learned about Roggecloof and the surrounds was so special! Our dinner table setting to the beautiful chill area over looking the vineyards! Truly amazing! We really felt like royalty! Do not miss this opportunity it’s really amazing! If I could give them more stars I would!
One of the most amazing places you'll ever have the privilege of staying at. The skies are spectacular and the staff are on par. Will definitely come back and would definitely recommend this amazing gem.Rooms: 5/5
An absolute gem! Rogge Cloof is the perfect getaway for peace , quite and quality time with loved ones. Stunning decor, clean facilities and we received the warmest and friendliest welcome from Sam much appreciated! Definitely returning in future, thank you for a wonderful stay it was definitely worth the travel for our family from Potchefstroom/Klerksdorp and Bredarsdorp.
Peaceful, beautiful stars, huge farm open for you to explore on a hike, by bike, or by car. You have my vote for a return visit. thank you to the friendly front-office staff and hard-working catering staff too.
Where to start with Rogge Cloof? Well the drive there from Matjiesfontein takes about an hour along a road that you will see almost no other cars. Once on the compound there is a drive of a couple of km to get to the reception and then a further 11km drive to the village where all of the cottages are located. The drive is along a dirt track so you have to take it fairly slowly, however this means that you get more of a chance to see all of the wildlife roaming though the farm. We stayed in the Wolskuur cottage which was spacious and comfortable. The WiFi connection was strong and there was no TV in the room. Outside there is a firepit that we made good use of as we had bought provisions in Sutherland for a Braai, once we had eaten we built the fire up again and watched the stars by the warmth of the fire. The sky is so dark in the Karoo that you can easily see the constellations and the milky way. The following morning we had booked Cheetah tracking, Andre advised that this could take anything between 3-4 hours, but we found Calvin in well under an hour and were guided to within 10 metres of him. Because we found him so quickly we were taken as a bonus to the fossil field where you can see fossilised dinosaur bones just laying on the floor don't pick them up though. On the drive to the fossil field Andre was very engaging in showing us and talking to us about the flora and fauna in the reserve along with the geological changes. The cooked breakfasts are filling and cooked to order, although do remember that if you say that you'll have a 9am breakfast you will need to leave the village about 20 minutes beforehand for the drive. I actually cannot fault anything with our stay and will return as we didn't have a chance to hike on the extinct volcano within the farm. They also make wine, and we have brought a bottle back to the UK so that we can remember our wonderful stay.
Don't ever ask for a take-away breakfast to treat your husband from an early rise... Two sausages and André will charge you R40. Ask the waitress to repeat after you your dietary preferences, if not you will not receive it correct the first time. How difficult can it really be to serve a meal with no pepper?Rooms: 3/5
It was nice till Andre the Resort Manager informed us at departure to pay for meals we never had. Neither was it mentioned when we did our online booking or any time during our stay... Completely in breach of the CP Act. We will not return!Rooms: 2/5
Rogge Cloof Private Nature Reserve is a hidden gem. Our group have been using this facility for creation science tours and fossil exploration. You will not find more friendly and accommodating staff. This facility is for sure world class.Rooms: 5/5
