Stunning views, easy access to the Brede River, camping site, with chalets if preferred, friendly and accommodating owners. Amazing stay and definitely worth coming back
An enjoyable family camping weekend that ticked many boxes. This compact grassed and shaded campsite is located in a small valley on the banks of the Breede river. Operated by Xama adventures and situated on a working farm approximately 25km downriver from Swellendam, access to this campsite is through good gravel roads from the N2. Only the last 400m or so of steeper rocky jeep track down to the campsite needed to be taken slowly. Normal cars will manage fine. The written directions on the website were easy to follow, and it is better to use those than to rely on your GPS. The 11 smallish Individual camping sites are each capable of accommodating 1 medium family tent or small camping trailer, so groups would be better off booking out the whole campsite or at least adjacent sites. Sites 1-5 offer deeper shade for tents and 9-11 are close to the sundowner deck overlooking the river. We made good use of extra shade awnings in spite of the trees. Drinking water is not available, only river water. There are occasional electricity points and yellow lights dotted around the campsite for lighting. Ablutions and facilities are adequate but rustic. The showers are clean and offer copious hot water and there is also a central boma area with fridge and fire pit that is suitable for groups. The small wooden jungle gym for kids looked in good condition. Bags of ice and sacks of firewood are available for purchase. There are also a couple of small chalets available for non campers, and the only campsite pests we were aware of were a few flies and mosquitoes. All rivers should be treated with caution, so although our experience was with a low and slow river offering fabulously safe and refreshing water activities, I’m certain that a full or flooded river would cause more adrenalin. The low level of the water mean’t a steep sandy descent for swimmers and water craft. For the manic activity addicts there is the possibility of kayaking up the river, or cycling on the gravel farm and district roads. Or going for a run in the midday heat. Or not. The highlights of a weekend camping here for us were the river, the silence, and the total absence of cellphone reception. Sundowners and a braai on the deck overlooking the river at site 10 were infinitely good for the soul. Afternoon visits by tortoises to the green campsite grass, swimming in the river, fishing, and games of cricket on the lawn kept the kids smiling. If you were lucky the fish eagle could be heard in the morning, and a local Cape Genet would sneak up close to steal leftovers at night. Overall a rustic but thoroughly enjoyable weekend giving the feeling of remoteness and providing great relaxation.
The best experience! Not only are the cabins and campsite clean and beautiful but the staff is also extremely friendly and helpful. The river is stunning and you’ll see a bunch of different birds from your stoep, including a few cute field mice, bats in the evening and a tortoise every now and again not to mention Ziggy the ultra friendly Labrador. Will definitely be going back!
The campsite is nicely located right at the river which is nice and warm to swim in. The camp is remote and in nature. The stars were amazingly beautiful to watch at night. There are nice fire places to have a braai. There is electricity but no drinking water. So bring your own or arrange with the host. You can also buy ice and braai wood from the host. The showers use river water. We spent 4 nights at the campsite. The host James welcomed us warmly. He helped us out when we had a flat tyre and took us to Swellendam to sort it out. A really nice place to relax and recharge.
IMPORTANT: DO NOT USE YOUR GPS. USE THE MAP ON THE WEBSITE. Campsite has grass, electricity, clean bathrooms. 20km gravel road was not challenge for my polo. Glamping tents available. Canoe hire available. Would definitely recommend.
