I adopted a wonderful terrier mix and the shelter staff were very patient with me as I visited every day until I could bring him home. They were very open to coordinating with my schedule in terms if when I could pick him up after he was neutered. Please know that the staff at the County shelter work very hard to provide the best customer service, and the best care to the animals in their shelter. Don’t forget they accept donations of food, toys, blankets, etc.

We were lucky enough to find our dog here a little over two years ago. He was six months old and unfixed. They made us wait a week to pick him up while they neutered him free of charge, which was kind and responsible. Percy's been an incredible dog for us, and we're really glad we found the folks here.

This shelter is very clean and the animals are well cared for. Staff is kind and caring and it shows in how the animals act. I recommend that you adopted from this shelter. They have great dogs !!!

The folks that I encountered working at this facility have been very nice, patient and supportive and spent time with me, helping me with all the wonderful dogs I was interested in. I have to say that the county needs to channel more money into this facility, its sad, nothing fun or creative, no nice yards for the dogs. Monterey County needs to work on a program to expose the dogs to the public more, take better, more creative, frontal view pictures of each dog (because you can barely even tell what a dog looks like on the web). Most of the dogs are beautiful but you would not know it by the pictures. They should have volunteers walk/socialize the dogs, provide some basic training for the dogs, give them a obedience certificate which will in turn make the dogs more desirable. Dont just put these sad dogs in a kennel and hope someone will adopt them. There are plenty of people who would volunteer their time. Also the facility should stay open longer than 5:00 PM and stay open on Sundays to give working people time to view dogs/cats. Who can get there by 5:00 PM? Not many. They should look at what other places are doing to get dogs exposed to the public and adopted. Look at Humane Society Silicon Valley for instance. Even the Salinas Humane Society or the Monterey SPCA has better pictures.
