Sur La Table

This store has everything, and things you never thought of to cook with, if you like to cook and like cooking gadgets, you’ll love this place. My wife bought a nespresso machine they have staff to demo and taste any kind of coffee. They were super nice and helpful. Easy parking as this is in a shopping center.

Chef Margaret demonstrated a wealth of information on macaron construction ranging from moisture retention, drop technique, and folding dangers to ingredient enhancement and flavor suggestions. Her teaching ability revealed experience and people skills. My daughters thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The $20 discount on future cooking classes provided a great incentive to return and the 10% discount on cooking items from the store filled my trunk with goodies.

My wife called this store to schedule a cooking class for our wedding anniversary. She had a few questions and wanted to book the class. One of the items on the set menu contained pork, which we do not eat. However, the rest of the menu looked great and so she asked if we could just simply sit by during the preparation of that dish. The individual on the phone asked her to wait a moment while he asked a colleague. Over the phone we could hear his colleague, a seemingly aggravated woman, began to start exclaiming about how that wouldn't make sense and why would we want to waste our money. It was disappointing to hear her tone and attitude towards such a simple question, but we did not want to disrespect the chef teaching the class by suddenly sitting idly by during the class without any apparent reason. The entire exchange was completely unprofessional and uncalled for. Merely asking if we can spend our money to enjoy a date night and prepare food, minus one item, should not be such a big deal that someone would feel the need to behave this way. If they can not handle such a simple request I fear what would happen with a real issue.

This review is solely based off of the customer service I received and not any of the cooking classes. I was in the area when a friend told me that Sur La Table had complimentary full size bottles of Olive Oil, so I stopped by. There were only 3 customers in the store when I walked in, including the woman that was right behind me and was helped before I was. Thinking, it's only fair they help paying customers first since I am there to ask for a complimentary product. There were 2 working associates at the check out and I asked one of them if they had any more olive oil in stock. She said she would check and went back to help the two customers already at check out and that's fine by me. I was browsing the store and always within proximity of the check out for her to get back to me. Her and her colleague were both working on checking out a 2nd customer which took longer than I thought. Finally, there was only me in the store and a 3rd associate came out to help out at check in, they were all discussing essential oils WHILE I WAS STANDING RIGHT IN FRONT OF THEM.... and finally the 3rd associate looked up and asked how she can help me. I looked right at the lady that was SUPPOSE to help me and said yes, SHE was checking if there was any olive oil in stock. The lady looked right back at me, didn't really care and went back to talking about essential oils, while her colleague ring me up. Apparently, because I was there for a freebie, I didn't deserve to be helped. Cool beans Sur La Table (River Oaks specifically).

Took a cooking class here and it was amazing! The instructor was really knowledgeable and fun. They had staff who helped every step of the way and our final product (tacos) were delicious!
