Description

In existence for over 30 years, Mario's is one of the oldest restaurants in Cape Town and was opened by Mario and Pina Marzagalli in 1971. For the past 12 years Pina has been at the helm, and runs the restaurant with the assistance of her two children Marilena and Marco. Pina, with her vivacious personality and great charm has built up a loyal following of customers and the walls of the restaurant bear witness to this, as every available space is covered with names and comments from satisfied customers over the past 30 years.
The relaxed informal atmosphere has ensured the on-going popularity of Mario's and it was recently awarded a Wine Magazine certificate as one of the S.A. Top 100 Restaurants. This is indeed a fitting tribute to Pina Marzagalli for her continued hard work and service to her customers. Her love of cooking is evident and she makes her own pasta including the ravioli and gnocchi, and she continues to import the Parma Ham and Salami to ensure the quality of these important ingredients.
The menu offers traditional Italian fare and there are regular specials such as Pina's delicious bean soup which is popular in the winter months, as well as more unusual offerings such as crumbed calf brains with capers, or marrow bones served with toast. Veal Saltimbocca with Parma ham, sage, brandy and white wine is a popular choice from the veal dishes, and for starters the Parmigiana de Melanzane - sliced fried brinjals with mozzarella and cooked tomato is highly recommended. Pina's signature dish however, is the stuffed baby chicken which is served with roast potatoes, vegetables and Pina’s homemade fruit mustard. It not only looks impressive on the plate, but tastes superb with a delicately flavoured stuffing mixture to enhance the flavour of the chicken.

We are a fully airconditioned restaurant.

There is a nice vibe in the restaurant, but the pasta that we had, lacked flavour, and the cannoli was cold in the middle. The tiramisu wasn't that great, they used cream instead of mascarpone.Food: 2/5
During my stay in Cape Town, I spent most of my time endulging in seafood and hardly ever visited the Italian restaurants. Nevertheless, I decided to try out the pizza. The seafood options were quite expensive so I went for the normal ham, peppers and mushrooms. I did enjoy the thin base and the smell of the wood burning oven just creates the authenticity of the typical Italian restuarants.
Just moved to Cape Town and found this place. An awesome Italian, family ran authentic restaurant. It's got a great cozy vibe with the smell of a wood fire oven and food cooking away. Wholesome food, loved it and will be back many more times. Kids loved it also.
The most overpriced restaurant that I have experienced in Cape Town for a long time. The creamy mushroom pasta was watery and prepared without care. Would have exchanged it with a readymade meal from woolies at all times. I hope they get to upper their standards as this place definitely has the potential. Unfortunately we left disappointed.
The atmosphere is very rustic with lots of charm and very friendly waiter and owner. We had the margarita pizza with extra olive and avo, the capriciosa pizza and two caprese salads. Corkage is only R35. Super tasty food and really highly recommended. We will be back very soon : thank you for great food and service.
The bill was dropped on our table without us asking for to leave. When we asked why the bill was given to us, there wasn’t an answer and the waitress walked away. Our current bill was well over R1000 and felt that this was an indirect way to ask us to leave despite us not asking for the bill.
We came late for dinner and they were willing to help us, we had a really nice fresh salad and a pizza, both were excellent. Typical European style restaurant with 2 waiters that are able to think for themselves and have pride in what they are doing
I'm not sure if it was a racist thing, since I didn't ask, but it did stand out that the one coloured person in the restaurant didn't get the same service as the others. It's a bit appalling. The food was was simply okay. But I would not recommend this place because of their service.
It's small, it's local, it's pure Italian. Not cheap but it is in Greenpoint, so it's expected. Really wanted to order the sea food pizza, let me know if you do.Food: 5/5
This place has the best pizza EVER especially with the thin crust Don't expect cheap food though This is not a fast food place and extra toppings are not cheap either But for the taste it was worth it
