Raggy Charters - Marine-Eco Cruises

About

Since 1997 Raggy Charters has been offering guests expertly guided tours, led by knowledgeable conservationist, wildlife educator and marine safari specialist Lloyd Edwards, to see whales, dolphins, seals, sharks, penguins and other marine in Algoa Bay.

Description

We hold the only permit in Algoa Bay for whale and dolphin watching, allowing us to approach these animals up to 50 metres. Although, being naturally curious creatures they usually come closer.

In South Africa whale season begins in June when we see humpback whales moving along the coast as they head up the East coast of Africa towards their breeding grounds. Humpback whales can be seen in Algoa Bay between June and early January, reaching peaks in July/August and again in November/December when they make their return journey, with calves in tow. Southern right whales can be seen from July to October as they enter the safety of the bay to give birth. Southern right whales are usually seen very close inshore and often nearby to the harbour. They are the most frequently observed whales along the South African coast.

We also offer Penguin Island Cruises where we take guests to visit St Croix Island. St. Croix is home to 22,000 African penguins, the largest breeding colony found in Africa. It is here where guests will get a close-up encounter with these comical birds. The African penguin’s breeding season reaches its peak between March and May, when guests may be able to see the chicks from the boat. As well as African penguins, both St. Croix and Brenton Island (a smaller islet close by) are inhabited by the endangered African black oystercatcher, white-breasted cormorants and Cape cormorants.

Raggy Charters has been assisting Dr Lorien Pichegru in her African penguin research for the past 5 years. Funds generated from eco-tours with Raggy Charters are used to fund this research and also the Baywatch Marine Conservation Project (www.thebaywatchproject.com).

Exceeded our expectations in every possible way. We saw hundreds of dolphins hunting - a rare sight - together with whales and seals. The manager is very concerned about eco-responsibility and puts in effort to neutralize the footprint of every cruise as well as to educate passengers.
We had a fantastic cruise this march with lots of dolphin sightings and even a few bryde whales crossed our way! The crew was very friendly and knowledegable and we felt they really care a lot about the wildlife in the bay. We were happy to support their charitable actions.
Very nice boat tour to islands where we saw penguins, a lot of birds, dolphins, sharks, and seals. We really enjoyed the cruise and the interesting information that Jake and his crew provided throughout the tour. The company takes part in research projects and environment protection. Part of the tour price which may seem a little high at first is used to fund all that. Overall a great day.
Our staff had a lovely beachfront cruise on Sunday, we had a bit of drizzle on the way out of and into port, but the protection on the craft was good to keep us comfortable. We were fortunate enough to see a pod of dolphins for about 10 minutes that played next to the craft. the crew were so polite, friendly and even though we live in Port Elizabeth taught us many interesting facts about our stretch of coast and how sailors used to navigate and what interesting things happened in the past. I also thoroughly enjoyed it when the skipper released the 500hp and we sped along the swells for a little bit.
We had the best time. Both of our guides were friendly, knowledgeable about not only the wildlife in and around the bay, but also about the history of Port Elizabeth, and Algoa Bay. Although we didn't see whales, we had two pods of dolphins come right up to us, and this was an amazing experience. Definitely a trip worth taking. A great idea for a Christmas gift.
Excellent tour. Jake and the team were very knowledgeable on the bay, its animals and the human activity interfering with the wildlife. They can't guarantee that you'll see anything, but we saw several small pods of dolphins, a Bryde's whale, and some penguins. Overall a lovely experience. Very thankful for the conservation efforts of Raggy Charters #SaveOurOceans #SaveAlgoaBay
We had amazing weather on the day. Saw so many species from bottle nose dolphins, straight nose dolphins, gannets cape fur seals, penguins. Our trip was awesome under the guidance of our skippers Jake & Keith. A most memorable trip. Thank you guys. The highlight of my week.
The most amazing day on the sea in my whole life! From whales, to great white sharks, to dolphins, to a 100 000 gannets on bird island, to 100’s of seals and the 1500 common dolphins to falling asleep on the way home..: best day every! Thank you Lloyd & Jake & everyone onboard. Was epic! Look forward to the next adventure.
Had an amazing day out with the Raggy Charter team. Knowledgeable team amd able to answer many questions and provide good insight. Thanks to Jake for staying in contact with me and advising on the weather im advance. This helped us have the right weather for the boat tour. Fortunately got to see some Southern Right whales, a huge pod of dolphins and observe some African penguins. Highly advise that anyone, even locals, spend the morning with them. They're also doing so much for the local community and the upkeep of the bay.
Had a lovely day out with Raggety tours , whales in abundance , as well as dolphins , sea birds , yellow tails and not to forget the seals ,an ample lunch was provided and the crew were very attentive .But just to put one record straight - Scotland’s Bass Rock has the largest colony of Northern Gannets in the world , SA has the largest of the Cape Gannet - a draw I think
