Way out in the middle of nowhere sits the ruins of the arguably the most important fort in the southwest. Fort Union was not only the largest military installation in the West in its day but it also helped supply 50 other forts.
Today however, the fort is now just ruins and a visitor center. Had the ruins been better preserved, there would be a lot more to see/tell. That said, it's definitely worth an hour stop if driving through the area.

Amazingly preserved historic area. Check the schedule before and come for stories at dark, arsenal days, and other special events. Ranger Greg is an awesome with tons of facts, stories and fun. Every one of the staff is knowledgeable about the area and its past. Clean visitors center with great restrooms. No food on site so eat before you come. Sunscreen and hats recommended and light jacket in case the prairie winds kick up.

I was really glad I visited this! I have to admit I wasn't as familiar with this part of American history as I should have been. What an education! I learned a lot which helped me to appreciate the efforts of the early Americans as they pushed west. The park service personnel were very helpful, friendly, and informative which I was thankful for. A must see!

I'm happy to have seen the picture of this fort at the Plaza Hotel. Only 30 minutes away, this is a piece of our history. Amazingly, you can still see the wagon ruts in some of the areas. It was a step back into time, where you can imagine the wagons, horses and people that called the Fort their home or came to conduct business. The fort is very large, quiet except when the bugles play which aids in transporting you back in time. The rangers are very helpful. If in the area of LVNM, take a moment to visit the fort and step back in time.
